WordPress.com has annoying IE bug

Everytime I want to make a link in WordPress.com it gives me a script error. Anyone know what’s up with that? It doesn’t give me an error in Firefox. No other blogging engine gives me an error when trying to build a link in IE. Hey, Matt, what’s up with this?

Update: I didn’t realize it, but Firefox is firing an error too. I went to Tools/Javascript Console in Firefox and there’s a bunch of errors there.

Ughhh, stop using IE. Either you’re using it because you work for Microsoft (and they force you to use it), or you’re an idiot. Take your pick: which one is it, Scoble?

Whether Scoble uses IE or not isn’t the point here. The fact is that a majority of Scoble’s users use IE. So Scoble wants to fix his blog.

Scoble, you should seriously look at CommunityServer. They kick ass.

Reading this page in IE gives me no errors, so the page Robert is talking about should be one of admin/author’s screens. If so, readers are not the point here. Anyway, I always think JScript is not true JavaScript, as well as HTML/CSS in IE is not what we call HTML/CSS, but, of course, it is good if IE can be supported without bending standard compliant codes, so it is worth trying to report your bugs and pages, error messages to the administrator. But, using Firefox only while your editing your entries is not a big deal, right? I think Robert has always been a Firefox user if he is not a liar.

    Hey Robert,
On an off topic, how did you edit your theme or which one are you using? It doesn’t look like any of the standard ones that I have access too?

    TIA
    Molly

Yep, when you go to add a link the box gets overwritten by a script request. The workround is to click YES, then YES again (when the box repeats), then click the closing X. You’ll find you can then add your link. Annoying, but not fatal.

What makes you think it’s a WordPress bug? Knowing how many ‘issues’ there are with IE, it’s not exactly unlikely the problem is with IE instead.

This is why many of us, and those people at WASP, get a tad annoyed with IE and it’s lack of moderness at times….

And Jim, are most of the readers here going be IE users? I’m not quite so sure. There are examples around of more technical sites havig much lower percentages of IE users, because many of the more technical people (me included) take the same view as Cody in the first comment.

Anyway, it isn’t really fair to say that it is WP.com’s bug, before you resolve the problem to conclude whose bug it is. :-)

Dom: I’ve tried telling him that over and over, but for some reason, he still uses IE.

It’s a bug that’s now been fixed in WP 1.6 (which isn’t even in beta yet). However, WPMU, which powers Wodrpess.com, still has it in.

  • http://www.b5media.com/ Jeremy Wright

I should add that broadcasting “WP sucks” to the world over an issue in ALPHA software is rather silly to me. Someone did something similar to Microsoft software and you’d be crying foul.

Isn’t it ironic how someone at MICROSOFT is complaining about bugs in the software?

Hey, guys, the bug happens in Firefox too. Firefox just hides the errors inside Tools/Java Console.

The Java VM/JRE used by IE on your machine might be an issue.

What Java and version are you using in IE and Firefox?

Before anyone else calls Scoble crazy, this was fixed this morning so if you’re not seeing it that’s why. It was our bug, not a problem with IE.

Yep that looks like it. I am abit disappointed as I would love to use WP but don’t want to have the lockin on the template (if I could accept that I would go to MSN Spaces!). In say this, don’t blame the WP people, if there was a chance of Scoble coming to my service (if I had one), I would do something like this as well.

Oh well, looks like I am staying with Blogger!
    Doh.

    1. Reality Check: wordpress.com is alphaware – please report all bugs and issues directly to the developers through the feedback.

    2. The invite for wordpress.com might not have it in writing, but by participating, there is an expectation that you are also here to help develop the program. It’s fun to play with a new toy, but you are in a position to help make that toy even better. Help by reporting to those who can do something about it rather than the public at large who can’t help you.

    3. By bringing the issue to the attention of the developers, everyone in the wordpress.com community benefits. By helping figure out your problem, you solve the problem of hundreds, maybe thousands of wordpress.com users’ sites, and help make WordPress 1.6 much stronger when it is finally released. I take that responsiblity very seriously. I hope you do, too.

    4. I am thrilled that you, Mr. Scoble, have entered the WordPress world and are helping WordPress gain respectability as an important user. I’m also thrilled that Matt and Donncha have bent over backwards to help you customize your wordpress.com Theme when NO ONE else on wordpress.com can. Show appreciation for such favors by reporting them to those who can help.

In other words, use the Feedback button in your Administration Panels rather than opening a wound publicly that may not heal.
