Vint Cerf says he’s a weird old fart

Vint Cerf just said hi. He was telling me about his first day at work at Google. He wore what he called the “evangelism robes.” They are eccentric Spanish robes. He said the younger crowd at Google didn’t know how to react (they didn’t understand that he was making fun of his new role as an evangelist).

“They think I’m an old fart,” he told me, “but I want them to know I’m a weird old fart.”

Yes, he gave me permission to blog this. He’s a really enjoyable person to meet. What an honor to meet the guy who invented the Internet. You gotta love a guy who has some humor about himself.

  1. I met Vint Cerf about five years ago at a meeting in Chicago. We arrived at the meeting early, and there he was just standing around. We started to talk with him and just had a great conversation with him for about 20 minutes, extremely approachable, a regular guy (just smarter than the rest of us).

  3. I want to know what he thinks about the internet now, how it has changed, and where it is going.

Scoble that would be an awsome video, if not then atleast a podcast would be great. Hearing it from the creator, god himself, would be… beyond amazing.

  5. I think the Department of Defense invented the internet. Vint Cerf just made it approachable, WWW style!

  7. Guzzard: “I think the Department of Defense invented the internet. Vint Cerf just made it approachable, WWW style!”

You’re thinking of Tim Berners-Lee. Vint Cerf was part of DoD project from the beginning, he cooked up tasty ol’ TCP/IP.

  9. Some of these posts are interesting. The internet is an evolutionary project that started in DOD originally funded by President Truman after WWII. Truman wanted an alternative method of communication other than the regular analog phone system (PSTN). The new DOD office toyed with many ideas and finally rested on packet switching technology. They initially approached AT&T at the time, but the “smart” folks at AT&T laughed at the concept so they went to the universities for support. Ultimately, people finally learned how to move data between two machines thus creating a network. There had developed 4 major networks all completely autonomus. Vinton Cerf came along and proposed the idea of all of the networks being able to communicate on one network thus creating the “inter-network”. This “Internet” used a standardized protocol TCP/IP. So, I think in essence he did create the internet as we know it in its present form, but he was just a part of the ever changing Evolution of the net. Rember beepers led to cellphones, cellphone will lead to something else, same goes for the internet.

    Thus endeth the lesson.
