I love a good storyteller

I’m listening to Charles Handy talk. He’s an Irish-born management scholar and best-selling author.

I could listen to him all day long. Why? Because he’s a great story teller. He helped start the London Business School back in 1967. I was born in 1965 so he has a bit more life experiences than I have.

Here’s an interview with Charles that gives a sense of his personality.

Tom is writing about the sessions on the IT@Cork blog.

You’re lucky to meet Charles Handy, I often heard him in interviews on RTE Radio 1, he brought imagination and flexibility to industries that were very ridged.

Handy is one of the most under-rated management thinkers, probably because he does not attempt to ‘market’ himself…but I think he’s on par with folks like Ed Schein and Drucker ..

Thanks so much for sharing with us the
wisdom of Charles Handy, I found
    this quote of his:
“It is a time for new imaginings, of windows opening even if some doors close. We need not stumble backwards into the future, casting longing glances at what used to be; we can turn round and face a new reality. It is after all a safer posture if you want to keep moving”
I would like to apply the relevance to this quote to the news today regarding the announcement by Mayor Ray Nagin that New Orleans will have the nations first wireless internet service,
Overcoming Hurricane Katrina and opposition from cable television and telephone companies. Kudos to Mayor
Nagin and the visionary team for new imaginings and having the guts of “not stumbling backwards into the
future, casting longing glances at what use to be; but turning round and facing a new reality”.

Yes, Charles Handy is extremely ‘listenable-to’! He often talks on BBC Radio, and you can replay some of the programs as streaming audio. Here’s a wonderful series of talks about business people done as … English lessons!

I have dined with Charles Handy near his home in Suffolk and met him and his wife a few times. They spend half the year living in London where everything is dedicated to him (his wife cooks, cleans does everything) then the other half dedicated to her photography.
