Typography in Windows Vista

I’m on my way to the airport, but just loaded up a video I did with Bill Hill and the ClearType team — they showed me the latest fonts and stuff for Windows Vista. This is the interview where we learned about research into aesthetics too. It’s a long one, but I could talk with this team for hours. After all, there’s nothing you look at more than the fonts on screen.

Anyway, I’m outta here to see my son. Will be back online this weekend sometime. Hope you’re having a good one!

Segoe UI is a great addition to the sans serif font family. It has real personality, compared to the stale Arial and Helvetia. Your readers can see an image of it here.

Do you know if it will be commercially available?

Why is it that Channel 9 cannot present an instantiation of the Media Player that has usable and sensible controls. You’d think with the brains at Microsoft someone could do this. Where is the running time counter, the volume control, the undock control?

What about a skip forward/back control? A slider to move to specific point in the video.

The one that is currently there sucks(and is even worse than the previous, square, clunky one that I complained about when Channel 9 first started).

The videos are great. But do some work on usability for people viewing them!

Corbel is great, have it as my default, much improved over XP fonts.

Brian: use the “download” link and you’ll get the full player.

I can not stress enough how much you guys have to download, install, and run the cleartype tuner if you use a CRT.

Hmm “Download” and “Full Screen” seem to do the same thing — it certainly is not obvious what those links do from the naming.

I still think someone should make the embedded player work correctly. There is no reason why it can’t have the functionality I indicated (at least in I.E.). Surely there is someone there that understands how to script the media player?

BTW the timings posted to your blog comments are wrong — still on European time?

Brian, the “Download” link is a higher quality version of the video, meant for download using “save target as”.

The “Full Screen” link is just for popping up the video in WMP.

Not to troll or anything, but the examples on that fontblogger site just seem fuzzy in comperison to my antialised text in Linux. (Namly, QT and GTK+ 2)
    Am I missing something?

James: I’ve looked at a lot of Linux systems lately and I don’t like the fonts on those, but I might be missing something. Remember that about 10% of people won’t be able to use ClearType (it uses color techniques that most people perceive as sharper, but 1/10 say it’s fuzzier). You might be one of those.
