Oh, and Brandon, can you help me get Glass running on my Toshiba M200? I can’t figure it out. Julian Kay shows why it rocks. (Brandon says in other comments here that all I have to do is load the LDDM driver, where is that sucker? I tried a bunch of different drivers but none give me glass).

    Mac developers have known this for at least 4 years now and most of the ones I know have their terminal apps set to look like smoked glass so they can read the installation directions under the terminal while they install the various nifty *nix compatible open source goodies that work on OS X. Saves screen space in a big way.

    Robert, while not definitive, I did a little checking, and it seems the Nvidia GeForce FX Go5200 32MB graphics in your tablet just doesn't have the horses to run Glass. If the requirements are lowered in the future, it's always possible, but for now I haven't seen any posts from users with that model claiming to be running Glass.

    You should find the latest graphics driver in WU though.

    Incidentally, since Vista is obviously installed you probably already did this, but just in case, the release notes indicate you should have BIOS 1.80 installed to avoid installation problems. If somehow you didn't already do this, then you should.
  • If you don't have an LDDM driver, you can try to manually enable glass by setting the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DWM\EnableMachineCheck to 0. Add the key if it does not exist.

    This worked on my HP notebook with Intel onboard graphcis adapter and Vista 5231.

    If this checks out, it means the premature retirement of my M200. I was looking to put the next Vista beta on it, but if it can't handle the video load for the fancy stuff, then I'll just have to get something else.

    So what Tablet PC these days does have the wherewithal to be a good Vista machine? The Thinkpad A51 maybe? Does anybody know?

    As for Vista, try this:

    1) Click Start
    2) Right-click on "Computer" and click "Properties"
    3) On the top-left, click "Hardware"
    4) Click "Device Manager"
    5) Expand "Display Adapters" then double-click on yours.
    6) Click the "Driver" tab then click "Update driver".
    7) Click the "I don't have a disc" option.
    8) Click "Browse my computer"
    9) Click "Let me pick from a list"
    10a) If you see "Geforce FX Go5200 (LDDM)" in the list, choose it.
    10) Otherwise, Uncheck the "Show only compatible hardware" checkbox
    11) Scroll to "Nvidia" in the left-most box, then choose "Geforce FX Go5200 (LDDM)" in right-most box and click "next".

    After installing that you might have to reboot (not sure) and then you should have Glass. This worked on previous builds but I no longer have my M200 so it's possible they've added a memory requirement. But I doubt it. Drop me an e-mail if you have any questions.

    Brandon, the latest driver is pushed automatically via Windows Update, so those steps aren't necessary.

    I think the only hope for Glass is to use the Registry hack, which is unofficial, unsupported, and could disappear at any time.
  • The requirements specified by MS for Aero Glass are 64MB with certain adapters. The go5200 in the M200 is listed by nVidia as Glass ready, but the 32MB part in the M200 isn't, as of this moment, within spec.

    Spent a lot of time looking at this as I'm joining the Tablet PC crowd with an M200 myself soon.
  • No Rick, by default it will load an XDDM driver for the mobile Nvidia chips. Same thing happened on my Tecra M4.

    As far as I know the 64MB requirement is a recommendation not a requirement. Though I have no information about Vista's official requirements and I don't even know if they've been determined yet.
  • Brandon helped me get the LDDM driver loaded and it didn't work. Got to the desktop, but hung shortly thereafter.

    Robert, are you running the latest BIOS?

    Also, I saw a report from one person who said that he got Glass going on that model at 800x600, "OK" at 1024x768, "not so good" at 1280x1024, and "terrible" at 1400x1050.

    What resolution did you try?
  • Rick: I always run at 1400x1050. It does work at lower resolutions, though, but that's not very helpful. I just switched back to non-glass.
  • I read similar article also named , and it was completely different. Personally, I agree with you more, because this article makes a little bit more sense for me
