Om talks about Apple 2006

Yes, it’s that time of year again. The time when everyone tries to guess what Apple is going to reveal at MacWorld.

The desperation is high. My son is so desperate to know that he goes into Apple stores and tries to get the salespeople to tell him what’s up. Seriously, he did just that the other day (I wasn’t with him, but I hear the salesperson at the Seattle store told him “I would lose my job if I told you that.”)

Anyway, Om Malik does a good job of telling Microsoft “you’re fired” and also makes some guesses at what’s coming.

Me? I’m taking Patrick to MacWorld. He wants to buy a new laptop so we’re gonna check out the latest. Yes, he’s a Mac fan. Steve Jobs snuck something into his food when I wasn’t watching, I’m sure of it! Heheh.

What do you think Steve Jobs is gonna reveal this year?

I’m gonna play safe. If Apple decides to keep the iPod shuffle line-up (and with the nano, that’s not 100% certain), they will have to introduce a black model.

    hmmm

    1) That he’s licensing Windows Vista from Microsoft.

    2) He’s retiring.

    realistically:

    1) Apple’s first foray into the home through a redesigned mac mini…

    2) more partnerships with movie studios etc…

    3) some announcement related to how many of product X they’ve sold so far…

Well, I think the only possible new computer hardware is a new iBook, but even that is pretty unlikely.

In terms of mac stuff, Jobs will show off OS X 10.5 Leopard for the first time. He will also announce/release iLife ’06.

More exciting, Apple will be building upon their already out there iPod products this January. Jobs will announce some sort of living room/consumer electronics device (don’t ask me what – I have no idea) and it will interface in some way with the current top of the line iPods. Also he will debut not just more TV (can you say HBO?) on iTunes, but also a new Movie service built in as well (integrates with already out there iPods?). That’s how it will be all about iPods, without really releasing any new iPods (since they’re still pretty new) — the new iPods will launch this June or August.

Anyway, those are just my guesses…

Hopefully he’ll be showing Leopard. He’d be crazy not to, if he wants to make a point about how Vista is only a cosmetic change to XP* he needs to show what is up his sleeve for the next release, and not rely on the changes that were in Tiger. If the rumours about the new Finder (explorer.exe equiv) are true then I bet we’ll find out at WWDC.

    * Whether this is true or not, I don’t know. I haven’t bothered trying to install Vista yet – nothing there that is really inspiring enough for me to waste the time doing it.

OK, I’m gonna play the Apple Rumors Game. I think we’ll see iPods with wireless headphones. There I’ve said it. :)

Intel based iBooks and Minis in Q1 and a roadmap for the rest of the computer line up.

Mini becomes the home entertainment hub / center / dohickey / whatever and iMacs get TV cards and a big giant cable input jack on the back.

Preview 10.5 and some home entertainment super duper software package related to the Mini and iMacs.

Steve Jobs steps down and is replaced by Mecha-Godzilla-Jobs, a giant robotic mashup of Jobs, Godzilla, and the Google Feed API.

And I’m left with the choice – replace my PowerBook now or wait until the Intel models come out – I’m guessing second half of the year.

He will unveil the MacTel. Then encourage his mindless minions to BUY, BUY, BUY! Even though the machine will cost 2x as much as similar hardware. He will then introduce the iPod . What I wish is that he would announce .NET for the Macintosh platform, like MS has done for their developers, wouldn’t that set the world on it’s ear?

If Apple really wanted to shock the world, they’d do something really different, like partner with VW or Mini or something to develop a limited edition of their car with an Apple-designed interior (although with conventional coloring) “UI”. Car UIs are too backwards compatible, so to speak, and it would be an interesting exercise in applying computer usability principles to the auto dashboard/AC/radio/cupholders, which have been in many ways unchanged for 50 years.

I am terrible at speculating so I won’t :) But I am interested to see what apples comes up with next year.

As for macs…I have been interested in them for a while but never actually used one 0_o If I have some extra cash I will have to get the cheapest mac possible just to play with it. All my friends are Windows users…bummer.

New Powerbooks. They’ve been languishing for such a long time, they have to do something about it. They’ll also probably do something with the ipod shuffle.

Ever since I gave my wife a Powerbook in May, I have had a 10x reduction in overhead time to manage her previously constantly crashing Outlook and Windows XP – we had a lot of talks in the past about not clicking on things, but to my horror, I started watching the way she used the web and mail and realized that she just didn’t want to be so detail oriented as to avoid absolutely every sneaky slime-ball in the world trying to get her to click on something nasty.

So, about 3 weeks after she was using the Mac(the transition to which was surprisingly painless), she clicked on something someone sent to her blog and the greatest thing in the world happened – nothing. The Mac has been a faithful tool for the last 7 months – Entourage works flawlessly with my Exchange server – and I have had ZERO complaints.

With that first-hand experience, I will religiously tell people to switch – OS X isn’t perfect and I am sure there will be vulnerabilities, but it will solve a lot of headaches for the next several years.

    Microsoft – You’re fired.

Fired, except for some applications, that is. ;) – certainly not the primary choice for OS anymore.

This is what makes Apple product releases so fun, you have no idea what is coming. With previous product releases all the rumours, “reliable sources”, speculation and market analyzation has never given us every fact about an upcoming product release there is always something to go “WOW” about.

I have a ticket to MacWorld, I hope I make it

I was waiting for a tablet from Apple, because they seem to try to get things right the first time. Of course, that was before I picked up an LS800, when I see that Microsoft (and Motion Computing!) have just about got it right.

My speculation? The Intel Mac, of course. Except the big surprise is that it will come dual-boot ready, or even configurable with Windows XP already installed as dual boot. Better yet – The OS’s come on their own partitions, and there’s a third data partition that both OS’s can read. Then you can work on the same documents from either OS, letting people compare the operating systems themselves.

I think this is what was missing from the switch campaign, or the Mac Mini effort to get people to try out Mac OS.

If you buy an Intel computer from any other manufacturer, it won’t be able to boot Mac OS (without hacking at least). But if you could buy an Apple that would boot Windows alongside Mac… that would drive the hardware sales that Apple is fond of.
