Apple stores powered by Windows?

by on January 1, 2006

I see that Sven saw that Windows machines are running some of the transactions at the Apple store he went into. Oh, Sven, that’s cool, but the truth is Microsoft relies on Apple stuff too. Remember the Xbox developer kits? Yeah, they were all Macs.

I remember talking to Virginia Howlett, who did the UI work on Windows 3.0. She said she used a Mac. By the way, she’s now an artist in Seattle. Here’s an interview with her. She also did a lot of the UI on Windows 95.

So, thank you Apple!

What a phony war...OS'es are not religions, use whatever tool fits the end-results best.
  • That's so true, Christopher. Standing on each other shoulders is always better.
  • Can we stop the trolling in '06- this isn't my blog and even I get tired of it.
  • "What a phony war…OS’es are not religions, use whatever tool fits the end-results best."

And whatever OS fits you best. For instance, many video editors and musicians prefer Mac. I can vouch for its awesomeness in that regard. But small still swear by Windows for those purposes. Good for them, as long as I keep getting my uber Mac products ;)

She designed Windows 3.0 and 95 and admits to it?

    Wow...
  • "She said she used a Mac"
"She also did a lot of the UI on Windows 95."

Maybe if she had stuck to using Windows for her graphics work, the lawsuit wouldn't have happened. ;) She was influenced by the superior interface. heh heh

Ah, the classic "stop trolling" troll.

As you said, it's not your blog. You're under no obligation to read it.
  • Well, to be fair, those earliest Xbox 360 devkits were running Windows :P

Apple and Linux fanboys always make a big deal when Microsoft is found to be using its competition. I don't consider this story news, but it at least puts the fanboys in their place.

The only problem I have is when people say "whatever OS is best for you" they avoid having a discussion about the merits or flaws of a particular OS, or comparing the two OSs on those grounds. This prevents focusing on improving all OSs so that they make up for their flaws.
  • hrmm... didn't know that.
  • ceejayoz- instead of lurking, why not contribute something. :) Write something that someone cares about (or anything for that matter) and then we'll talk.

I think the “whatever OS is best for you” line is perfectly valid. I detest Macs. I don't think they're bad and I realise that a lot of people love them but I just don't like the interface. It doesn't suit me as well as the Windows GUI. That's my personal preference. I don't feel the need to go and jump on a Mac just because people talk about how 'elegant' or 'superior' the inteface is.

OK idiots - first of all the xbox dev kits are on the PowerPC platform because the xbox360 is using a Custom IBM build power pc and no longer any intel cpu's. THATS the reason why the xbox 360 kits are on a mac, so that one can simply compile the C++ code for the right platform - No RETAIL Version of windows will run on any PowerPC. Mac's are retarted - i got 2 powerbooks, there is only 1 way to click and use programs - extremly limited - A MAC is like buying a car which can only travel on say 10% of all streets in the US, compared to a PC which is like a car who can travel on 99% of all streets.
  • Great stuff
