I gotta get some sleep…

by on January 5, 2006

I saw this post by Om Malik talking about Gates vs. Jobs in digital music and I started getting visions of Gates and Jobs going at it in Fight Night Round 3, the new game demoed by Gates and Ballmer. My head is spinning. The screen is going blurry. I need sleep. It’s CES week, more later.

  • Hey man,

Met you at the Digital Experience press event with Paul Boutin. You friggin' rock! I love the site, and the perspective you throw our way from the good ol' boys at MS.

    Later,

watched the whole stream later Scoble...my picks are the iHD and fight night demos...just wished the tablet functionality was given more attention...

    great stuff...

"Dominatrix in pin stripes versus Diva in a black turtleneck."

    Indeed.
  • i just watched that fight night demo and was floored....though i am small, i am strong - and imagine that this game will allow for me to project all of my pent up frustration and anger with the world toward a machine console bereft of feelings...after i beat the game, i will write a book in which i will somehow blame much of my anger on family or conflict in my life...oh wait, somebody else already did this, and then he followed up with a line of grills sold at target....

Apple's iPod-iTunes is no more closed a system than Microsoft's Windows Media Player and its DRM.

Both formats are proprietary and incompatible with the majority of MP3 playback devices out there past and present. Over the long term, any user that relies on the WMP or AAC format is going to be screwed as far as compatibility or ability to transport their music.

    For portability/open standards:

    OGG>MP3>AAC or WMP

This is just sour grapes from Microsoft for not having the player in its "ecosystem" to compete with the iPod.

Microsoft is to Apple as Justin Timberlake is to U2.

Its my understanding that the labels get a huge chunk of the 99 cent iTunes price -- is Microsoft willing to give up that much to a 3rd party? Have they ever?

    Urge is already DOA.

I predict the decision to support HD-DVD over BluRay (via 360) will be a water-shed moment in Microsoft's history, the cash incentives kick shows the desperation. For Sony, Blu-Ray is everything, they are betting the farm, and Microsoft just declared war on LG, Samsung, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Sharp, Yamaha, Zenith, Philips, JVC, Pioneer, Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, MGM and Lionsgate.

With wavering support from HP and Intel. But Toshiba ("delay" as middle name) being the really only strong supporter. With 3 studios going dual, Universal, Warner Home Video and Paramount.

Shoulda stayed neutral. But I see the big board. Checkmate.

What does MTV have to do with Music and what is this demographic of which you speak?

I blow about $1-200 per month on iTunes downloads when I can crack them (iTunes 5 + JHymn let me do that).

Since iTunes 6 broke JHymn I've stopped buying. Little data point for the ITMS sales figures. Hope they noticed the change in my buying habits.

I don't share, or pirate, but after my iPod lost authorization because it hadn't been docked with the computer for a week, I refuse to give money for stuff I can't use any friggin way I want. DRM blows and I won't support its use. DRM I can easily circumvent is tolerable.

Windows Media - the WM Player sucks eggs and loses sync often. Microsoft has a long standing history of screwing its customers and emptying its wallets.

If you think of Apple and M$ as uncles, M$ is the uncle who only shows up when he needs money to turn you onto an opportunity that is always too good to be true and leaves you a little poorer than wiser. After awhile you learn and you're just never going to trust him again.

Apple is the uncle who is hip and always turns you onto the next cool thing. He's fun and while he sometimes leads you astray, you benefit more often than not.

Guess which one I entrust with my record collection?

    Windows Update just zapped this...

Security Update for Windows XP (KB912919)

Umm what up? WMF fix? Or pre-release Windows Update glitch?

Innocent Bystander -- your iPod couldn't have lost authorization. There is no "authorization" on an iPod. iPods can play any iTMS-purchased music from any account, as long as the computer loading it is authorized. So any iTMS music you have on your iPod will continue to play, no matter how long it's been disconnected from your computer.

    DUDE, get moving! :)

Microsoft announced that it would release a security update to help protect customers from exploitations of a vulnerability in the Windows Meta File (WMF) area of code in the Windows operating system on Tuesday, January 2, 2006, in response to malicious and criminal attacks on computer users that were discovered last week.

Microsoft will release the update today on Thursday, January 5, 2006, earlier than planned.

Well, that crisis averted, someone put in overtime, still horrible handling and mixed messages, and panic caused per the delay.

Yo Sam - lets just say the pod started skipping (refusing to play) all non-hacked ITMS purchased songs after being away from the computer (using dedicated charger) for a while. How would you characterize that behavior?

In this week's Jan. 9 05 NY Magazine

"The Softening of a Software Man"

"Like the robber barons, Bill Gates has moved from trying to take over the world to trying to save it. No wonder no one’s afraid of Microsoft anymore."

  • Innocent -- sounds like a clear case of PEBKAC to me.
  • mudwick
funny, i stumled across this site while researching an issue where my ipod seems to lose the ability to play all ITMS purchased songs every time i'm away from my authorized computer for a week. here i find one person having the exact same issue, one post instisting that "any iTMS music you have on your iPod will continue to play, no matter how long it’s been disconnected" (including very official looking link!), and one PEBKAC accusation.

    hm.

i've also seen this issue mentioned at macintouch. but it's very elusive. nothin i can find in the apple KB. the "geniuses" at the local apple store glaze over when i try to explain it to them.

do any of those people who are dismissing the issue above actually have an ipod with ITMS music on it? have they taken it on vacation, or otherwise been away from their itunes system for over a week? can they speak from experience? i think i probably know the answer to this, but it's worth asking.

i'll keep digging- if anyone has some real tech to bring to the table, that'd be nice.

i'm getting tired of my ipod turning into a paperweight halfway through every trip i take....
