Feed to audio

Neil MacLean just wrote me and says this is really cool: Feed2Podcast.com. Stick your feed in one end and an audio file comes out the other end.

That is a very neat little application. The demand for podcasts is definitely growing. Well worth the download. Thanks for sharing.

umm, it’s not a download. I tried that on my blog (http://blog.damnednice.com), but they seem to use a very slow XML parser engine. Here’s what I’ve figured out so far:

    1. Their player is a Flash app that plays an MP3 file. If we can figure out the naming convention they use to come up with these MP3 filenames, we can get around that annoying flash plugin and seperate window, and simply embed the audio directly into the blog and feed. That would be sweet.
    2. They generate a new RSS feed based on yours, and the player reads back form the one they generated. Unfortunately they don’t refresh their generated feed on-the-fly, or very frequently at all. Therefore, when I add a link to my blog to “listen to this podcast”, it actually plays starting at the previous entry until it updates.
    3. Their blog states they intend to release a WordPress plugin that automatically embeds their corporate propaganda directly into your blog and feed. Couldn’t they just put the player at the bottom of the blog entry and feed? if so, I could live with a small text link in a location I specify.

Even better is Talkr. Check it out over at http://www.talkr.com or try it at my blog, there is a “Listen!” button below each post. You can even use it in iTunes if you drag&drop the link there.

I think there is a need to have a service like http://www.rentacoder.com to hire real people to dictate/transcribe text to speech. Robotic text to speech still sucks and is impossible to listen to. There must be 1000′s of people out there who wouldn’t mind making a few extra dollars by putting their voices to work from home or school. College students and stay at home moms come to mind. If you search for this type of thing I think you will only find professional level services that charge ridiculous amounts of money.

Ideally I might be able to set up a pool of narrators to read my blog, when I post they would all be notified. This would increase the amount of time to change the post into a podcast. There would of course be an interface tailored for this sort of thing.

I suppose you might think the blogger could do this instead of hiring someone, but I am thinking not all bloggers love their own voice, someone else may want to pay to have this done (I may want to take the top 10 blogs on topic “foo” and create a daily podcast from them assuming I have permission for this). I can think of other reasons.

Just a thought, wish I had time to do this sort of thing!
