How to use new Cingular phone as modem

by on January 17, 2006

For those of you who are buying the new Cingular 2125 phone (the one I have) you might want to save these directions on how to use it as a GPRS/Edge modem in your references file for when you need to get on the Internet but no Wifi network is nearby. Thanks to Mike Poulson for doing the hard work.

I want that phone so bad I can taste it. Unfortunately Cingular is one of the more unreasonable carriers when it comes to upgrading phones, and it hasn't been 6 months since I got the smt5600. I can't decide if I want it bad enough to buy it from ebay.
  • That advanced setup option he includes is an extra step. I blogged the instructions for my SMT5600 last year and they still work with 2125 at 115 kbps.
  • Maybe it's been asked before but I'm new around here. Why is that you use Wordpress for your blog and not MSN Spaces?
  • Arun: cause MSN Spaces isn't good enough for me. No control over look and feel for one.
  • I was going to flame you on you being an MS-guy-not-using-MS-products, but I happened to read an earlier post on how ur mantra is digital-lifestyle and not constantly blowing Microsoft's horn. Honourable objective :)...though it is kinda hard to believe that such noble thoughts actually emanate from Redmond...haven't they got to you already? ;)
  • arun: I've been on a non-Microsoft blog for five years now. :-)
  • interesting microsoft sentiments :-)

Go Microsoft !! hehe, just kidding...

I am pissed, I can’t add storage to my phone (cingular 2125). I bought a 1 GB miniSD card, that didn’t work, exchanged that with another one. Same result. exchanged it for a 512 mb, that doesn’t work I got two more coming in the mail so hopefully I just picked up another bad product and maybe I can be complete in just a couple of days. But this, I must say has been a very disappointing holiday season for me, a far as gadgets are concerned.

Any clues for a Cingular Blackberry 7100?

Why does Windows still not support these devices properly? I can plug in a land-line modem and I don't have to enter cryptic AT commands to get it to dial the internet. But if I want to use a GPRS modem connection, I have to deal with instructions like that. It's nuts; half the planet have phones with GPRS modems in them, but Windows has precisely zero real support for them. Whoever is responsible for this stuff at Microsoft must have been asleep for the past 5 years. Is there any plan to have support in Vista? Or are hundreds of millions of potential users not important?

I've been using my V551 as a modem on medianet for over 18 months and have never been charged for data. But when I bought my new laptop I connected without putting anything into the extra initialization commands line in modem properties and it worked fine. The number I dial is *99***3#. T

The extra string I was using was at+cgdcont=3,"IP","wap.cingular" with the username and password are as you stated. We haven't been able to get my sons 2125 to connect though. Not sure why. I'll try the string you posted. Thanx, Gmantwo

Is it possible to connect to Internet using Cingular 3125 (just like 2125 with a better package)? I would like to use USB instead of bluetooth.

Newbie question: when you're using the edge phone as a modem, can you simultaneously talk on the phone?

    thanks

If your phone can't read larger SD cards such as 1GB yuo need firmware update on your phone, if there is any.

When you use phone as modem or SD card reader with PC you can't receive calls.

Has anyone got confirmed way to use BlackJack SGH-i607 as modem?

    Thanks
