Off to Switzerland, taking my podcasts

by on January 31, 2006

Hello from gate B9. I’ll soon be getting on Continental Airlines CO 1580 X to Newark. Then onto Geneva Switzerland. So, I won’t be reachable today.

Anyway, I’m using my new Cingular wireless card to download a bunch of podcasts. Got any podcasts I should consider?

The Podcast Network has a gadget show. I listened to the first few minutes and it sounds worth getting the rest of the show.

Rob Greenlee has a new mobile podcast blog. He’s been doing Internet radio for longer than I’ve been blogging and is always a favorite.

Carly Fiorina gave a talk at MIT. She used to run HP. Even if I don’t agree with how she ran the place, I bet I might learn something from her.The Invisible Hand Podcast has a weekly podcast devoted to management thinking and other business topics and this week he interviewed my co-author Shel Israel.

Landed.fm has an interview with Geoffrey Colvin, senior editor at large of Fortune Magazine.

I’ll download some more traditional ones like from IT Conversations, Leo Laporte, Chris Pirillo, and John Furrier to catch up on what the top tech podcasters have been doing.

What podcasts are you listening to?

  • I was just listening to the most recent podcast by Mark Driscoll at Mars Hill Church in Seattle. I don't know what your religious affiliation is, but you should give this podcast a try - especially if you're getting on a long flight. The podcast is:

    http://lite.marshillchurch.org/podcasts/feature...
  • I'm kind of attached to MarketingOnlineLive.com ;-)
  • I'll push my Unsigned Rock Music Podcast on The Podcast Network, TPN Rock (http://rock.thepodcastnetwork.com/ and http://rock.thepodcastnetwork.com/feed/), 30 minutes of unsigned, unknown, under-appreciated but brillliant new music.
  • if you've got video i like joe cartoon - yes, very explicit sometimes but nice break. http://joecartoon.libsyn.com/rss. welcome in switzerland & hope you enjoy it.
  • Ricky Gervais (http://www.guardian.co.uk/rickygervais) - hands down the funniest podcast on the net.
  • I'll do a little self-promo as well. I do a small podcast about VC and tech at VentureWeek.com. I recently mixed up the format so I now do a weekly wrap-up of the goings on in the tech community (company launches, financings, etc.) and I do occasional "panel" shows with top VCs and entrepreneurs where we discuss specific themes (Web 2, Search, Music Tech, etc.). Sound quality isn't perfect but I try my best. I hope you enjoy!
  • Ricky Gervais is the best! I agree 100% with Joel. You'll laugh out loud on the plane. The last time I was on a flight and listening to Gervais the people next to me looked at me like I had 10 heads because I was cracking up. You'll probably want to start with the first show since it buids from there.
  • for those from the web2.0 Map ( http://www.fourio.com/web20map/) who need to know where Switzerland is - don't worry it's not on the map 'cause Europe isn't on the US (only) maps .!.
  • Not a comment on podcasting, but for those Canucks wondering about EVDO cards, Bell has one:

    Much cheaper than Rogers.
  • Matt

Excellent multi-disciplinary, but focused on comic books podcast

Upbeat, friendly, funny hosts and big name guests. Was on the front page of itunes yesterday.

Should you want to deviate from an IT related topic and laugh for awhile, I suggest the Ricky Gervais podcast available from Guardian Unlimited.
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/rickygervais
  • I'd suggest some music too, and if you don't like Rock so much ;o) I'd suggest the Tartanpodcast to you - also Scottish, language learning included as it is with Ewan.

U-Turn cafe is more chill too. And of course Coverville. ;)

For a long flight, you also you try out a Podiobook or get some more European taste with the BBC. ;)

    Robert,

Check out www.nyub.net if you want a break from mainstream radio to hear a fellow 'softie's music podcast. It's all legal music - I've managed to get to the point where major independent labels are starting to approach me as a way to break new bands.
  • Shoot, I'll pimp my podcast as well. It's indie oriented music with VC jokes thrown in for fun. Here's the feed:

    http://feeds.feedburner.com/internmentcamp/loud...
  • Not IT related, but a great insider's look at the who's who of the curling world.

    http://www.thecurlingshow.com/
  • If you've only got one minute :) you'll love Mike's Manic Minute http://www.softwareland.org. My "nearly daily" thoughts on podcasting, software, music and anything else that captures my eye.
  • And don't forget the podcast of Gary Flake's first ever public presentation on Microsoft's very own Web 2.0 think tank, Live Lab2.

You're even in it with the Edge Case bit.

    http://web2.wsj2.com/live_labs_microsofts_think...
  • I recently interviewed Chad Fowler about his book "My Job Went to India". It is a pretty interesting interview about IT outsourcing that is worth a listen.

  • Robert,

BoingBoing has a post about an article that relates to Microsoft and it's implementation of DRM.

Have you seen this? Do you have a take on it?

    Here is the link:

  • Would echo all the positivity about Ricky Gervais - every Monday for the past few weeks I've been gurning like a happy fool on the train to work in the morning as I listen to him, Steve and the real star of the show Karl Pilkington whose diary from Torremolinos nearly got me thrown out at Clapham Junction.
  • It has been brought to my attention that it is hard to come by the early episodes of the Ricky Gervais show. Here is a link I found that should alleviate some of this (top right of the linked page). http://www.kingricky.co.uk/ Enjoy!
  • Christopher Coulter
The interesting Podcast I have yet to find, mostly rambling without scripts or preachy-winded speeches or poor-audio NPR copy-cats. Audio books more of my taste. Well, podcast as podcast that is. Now when the pro's like Limbaugh just use the 'branding', well then that's different.

Have fun in Switzerland, Enjoy the powder. Relax !!
  • "The Science Show", ABC Radio National (that's the Australian Broadcasing Corporation). http://abc.net.au/rn/podcast/feeds/science.xml
  • Hey Robert,

You are probably already subscribed to PodLeaders.com (Thought Leaders podcast) but just in case, I thought I'd mention it.

I published an interview with Mary Hodder today - it was great, she's a fascinating interview.

Also of interest to you should be the IT@Cork podcast, (see http://blog.itcork.ie) - you can now find the Charles Handy talk podcast there - it has received fabulous feedback.
  • Lukas
Cool, What are you going to do in Switzerland?

Greetings from one of your swiss blog reader. ;)
  • I'm speaking at the LIFT conference. I'll also be looking to cause some trouble. Er, go skiing. :-)
  • Daily Source Code

    Herro Flom Japan

    Evil Genius Chronicles

Dawn and Drew (in fact i believe i only started listening after i heard your podcast with your patrick and yourself ;))

    Madge Weinstein-Yeast Radio

    Morning Coffee Notes

    On occasion Gilmor Gang.

I don;t listen to much tech stuff. I tend to read the RSS feeds. I find that the Tech stuff gets a bit cheesy in their style.
  • Here's a podcast with gurus of the Identity World that's pretty interesting: http://www.digitalidworld.com/modules.php?op=mo...
  • Greg
-I think TWIT is the most entertaining podcast - inciteful and funny. I love this quote about RSS reader updates punishing servers with frequent updates: "sitting on the edge of your seat in an automated fashion"

    - I like GeekNewsCentral because Todd is informative and very real

    - Steve Gibson is annoying on Security Now!, but he does often get to the heart of security issues.
