What is the Origami Project?

The site is registered to Microsoft. It’s a good tease. But what is it? And why do my readers know about this before I do? (JP of DesignTastesGood sent me this question).

I do know that Origami is the code-name for a new kind of device. Oh, heck, here come the NDA police, gotta go! …

  31. [...] Everyone’s speculating about OrigamiProject.com: Scoble, MaryJo, Neowin, News.com… I’m not one to fan the flames or anything… wait a second, of course I am! If the project does indeed refer to the device that Neowin talks about, then we’ve all seen it before. Microsoft demoed it at WinHEC 2005. While I was there, I had the opportunity to interview a woman on the MobilePC team, where she showed off the prototype device that Bill had onstage. I never published the interview, but I’m going to have to go back through my recording and glean any details I can.. I’ll post that later. [...]

I’m not incredibly technical, and under no circumstances would I ever consider myself a “gadget geek,” but I was really intrigued by Origami and was looking forward to learning the actual promised lowdown today.

Little did I know that when I went to the site to become further enlightened, I would be met with little more than what I already knew: nothing.

As an interested consumer (or at least formerly interested), I’ve gotta say, there’s one sure way to help me lose my interest fast, and that’s when a teaser turns itself into nothing more than *another* teaser.

    Way to go, Microsoft–NOT!

  39. [...] I was also seeing this Origami Project buzz on the Internet, as Microsoft does its best Apple impression and doles out teasingly small bits of information on a new device. I remember when corporations introduced products weeks, months, even years in advance and then you waited for it to hit the store shelves. Not any more. We now wait for the product announcement with the proverbial bated breath. “They’re keeping it a secret so it has to be great.” With Apple’s latest announcement (a computer update and an iPod boom box) a monumental bore, and an apparently crushing disappointment to faithful Apple-nuts, I’m hoping that we are near the end of the product announcement mystery date phase of the consumer electronics industry. However, I digress. [...]

You can find out more at http://www.infusionblogs.com/blogs/activenick/archive/2006/03/02/393.aspx and http://www.infusionblogs.com/blogs/activenick/archive/2006/02/13/303.aspx. Hope this helps answer some of your questions. I have revealed as much as I could without breaking my NDA.

Patience is a virtue… wait for it to come out. See what it can and can’t do, then buy if you like it. If you don’t then don’t. Easy as that… Viral or any other forms of marketing is marketing. It is made that way to sell… But it does not require you to buy it or want it… Why blame Microsoft? Let them be… After all it is their business… not unless you own gazzzzzilllllioons of stocks…
