Damn, never had a lunch like I just had before. Michael Arrington of TechCrunch talking with Bill Gates. Also at the lunch was Lynda Weinman, founder of Lynda.com and Albert Lai, founder of Bubbleshare.com. I asked Bill about when he was gonna give people at the edges of his company the ability to purchase fun companies like the ones Michael sees. He answered that there are some things that probably should always require approval. Actually he gave a good explanation of what he sees as good acquisitions and bad and why acquisitions need to apply to a strategic direction of a company and shouldn’t be done without executive oversight. Hey, it’s not often you get to ask Bill a question like that so thought I’d go for it.
At the end Michael, his eyes big from meeting Bill (they didn’t know ahead of time that Bill would be there) asked “so, do you have lunches with Bill like this a lot?”
Um, no. Most employees never get a chance like this.
Update: Albert Lai has more on the lunch on his blog and Michael Arrington has more on his.
