Happy Father’s Day

Patrick woke me up this morning by giving me a backrub, then he led me downstairs where Maryam made me waffles. Is life good? You bet!

We're watching the World Cup on our new HDTV. HD will do more for soccer than any other single thing. Damn, it totally changes how enjoyable the game is to watch because you can see a broader swath of play and it's stunningly better quality.

The US stunned me against Italy yesterday. I thought they were gonna get slaughtered. If it weren't for the refs they might have won, and even being a man down they tied.

Anyway, hope you're having a great father's day.

  1. The Ref’s performance was one of the best in this tournament up till now. The 2 red cards and the yellow/red were good calls, but De Rossi should get permanently banned from the rest of the tournament for such a brutal attack on McBride.
The linesmen on the other hand were awful….

  3. Dmad: you must misunderstand what a blog is. It’s a way for us to spout off on things we don’t really know much about. Heheh. That’s the American Way.

But, seriously, I played five years of soccer when I was a child and have attended many professional games. What makes you such an expert on whether I’m expert or not?

  5. Well Dmad lets hear your brilliant football analysis then. Robert is giving a US supporters perspective on the game which is fine as it’s clear that’s where he’s coming from.

I don’t think the US commentators have done a good job of pointing out that FIFA treats the World Cup games as opportunities to show where officiating should go hence leading to calls that may not resemble what people see in their home leagues.

As for the game, it was a case of two different styles of play not so much combining as smouldering and threatening to explode. The US were tackling and fouling and the Italians decided to give Portugal a run for their money in the exaggeration department. A better ref would have imposed more control and kept things from simmering over as they did. The cards were reasonable giving FIFA’s intentions. The linesmen were ghastly on quite a few bad offsides calls for Italy. The callback on the second US goal was correct.

  7. Scoble, leave the sports commentating to those that know what they are talking about. Stick to what you know.. whatever that is.

  9. Yeah well done the U.S! Hope you guys stick around for the next round. As for the ref’s calls, they were spot on. The thing is, some rules have been added for this competition (lunge tackle is a sending off offence) so some of the ref’s calls may seem harsh but they are by the book, even if some of the ink is still wet on some of the newer pages :)

  11. Well, I think Red Cards should only be handed out for egregious stuff (like the Elbow that Italy dished out). The Red right before the half didn’t seem justified to me, but then I guess that’s what makes it an interesting game in of itself. The Ref is a 12th man on the field.

  13. “If it weren’t for the refs” … well I think the refs did a great job. That game was dirty and all cards were justified. Also the US did a great job against italy. Hope they win against Ghana.

  15. In my humble opinion, the US played in a cynical and reckless way yesterday – it was a dirty match with a foul atmosphere. I seem to recall that 40 minutes into the game, the US had committed twice as many fouls, on the order of 18 or so. Tempers were aroused, and then there was that nasty Italian elbow. Opinion from the pundits here in Ireland (so hopefully somewhat neutral) is that *all* the referee’s decisions were justified.
