Second Life turns three

The ThoughtPlasma blog is celebrating the third birthday of Second Life. While we’re talking about it, I found Paul Marino’s Thinking Machinima blog. Really cool stuff, interesting videos. Machinima are videos that are recorded using avatars in Second Life and other software like Halo on Xbox. There’s a new art form taking shape here and it’s fascinating!

  • Happy Birthday SL. I hope to see more folks checking out what is going on in Second Life and if you are interested in Machinima let me know. They held a Machinima festive during the celebration and I got a sneak peak at some of the work that was done. It is truly amazing how much can be done these days for so little cost.

  • Maurice: let me get started in my new job. I gotta spend some quality time in Second Life in August. My son has gotten way ahead of me and I need to build some stuff and play around a bit before I go on any more shows. :-)
  • At The Electric Sheep Company we are finding machinima to be a great way to describe Second Life to people. This Radio Open Source machinima is a good intro to what people are doing in Second Life. The NMC Campus, Seriously Engaging machinima shows some of the serious applications of the technology.

    Paul Marino's stuff is great. The Still Seeing Breen video is excellent, it's a music video using Valve's facial animation technology in their engine to get one of the characters lip-syncing to the song. Interestingly enough, Valve's tech uses the Microsoft Speech API to do the phoneme recognition for the lip-sync. It's cool stuff.

    But it's still more work than getting someone to tilt their view up and down in time to the speech in Halo, so that tends to get done more...
