Geek events coming

I’ll be in Boston next week for the Microsoft World Wide Partner conference.

Would love to have a bloggers/Geek dinner, Boston is a fun town!

Heading to Redmond end of month for TechReady. Definately hope to some some geek cocktail time. Would love to see something though here in NC that pulls in geeks from lots of companies. Hmmmm I am actually meeting tomorrow with some folks around possible Information Worker community events…. let’s see several hundred IW community members from a multitude of different companies plus downtown Charlotte and beer and wine…. May be a techie cocktail event in the works. Thanks for the indspiration

Seattle has two weblog meetups that happen monthly, East Side is usually the first Tuesday (delayed a week due to Fourth of July this time) and Seattle proper is the third Wednesday. Topics aren’t strictly geeky, but if those present wish to geek out, it’s allowed! U’m the organizer so there is usually info on my site, or on meetup.com

I maintain a public calendar on google calendar called “Events for Geeks” (see

I’m happy to add others as editors – the idea is to create a shared resource for Geeks (and event organizers) everywhere.

My basic criteria:

- the event should be publicly known (i.e. private, invite only/off-the-record events won’t be listed)

- whenever possible a URL should be include for all events listed

- most events should be listed as fullday events with details explaining what and where. Otherwise watch the timezones and try to get it right

- not all events listed are intended as events people might attend – many are listed as “events organizers should be aware of” (such as finals weeks for Stanford and UC Berkeley).

- non-tech but of geek interest events are more than welcome (Burning Man, GenCon, SXSW, etc)

I’m always looking for geek and tech events that fit in with our travels too. I’ve been trying to use Upcoming.org for this – the tech section – but I find it’s way too unwieldy and slow for it to work well.

Shannon – your calendar looks very useful. do you think putting the location in the title field for the event would be helpful? If you didn’t already know Gnomedex was on, Gnomedex Seattle would tell you whether it was worth clicking through for details more than just ‘Gnomedex’.

The Next Web Conference is one of the major conferences in Europe about Web 2.0 (whether you like that term or not) involving RSS, AJAX and all new web technologies, and how they’ll bring new business models. It will be held on the 7th of this month, at Amsterdam (The Netherlands).
Among the speakers, you can find Kevin Kelly from Wired, Michael Arrington from TechCrunch, Kevin Rose from Digg and a bunch of other interesting ones!
I’m definitely not going to miss this one!

We are holding it at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. We have a strong geek community. It should be a good time.

Echoing the person who has set something up on Google, why not add events to Eventful? You can add tags to your events, so everything of interest to Geeks could have the “Geek” tag – although of course overuse of a tag renders it useless as a filter. Eventful has a nice interaction with desktop tools that support the iCalendar standard, allowing you to click on a button and open it in a calendar program which is associated with that MIME / file type; that’s about as simple as it gets right now in the calendar world (can’t speak about Google Calendar as I haven’t used it enough yet).
