Firefox advocacy in Japan

by on July 21, 2006

I was over at Joi Ito’s blog and saw how Firefox advocates are trying to get more awareness among everyday people. That’s a great sign that geeks are trying to get non-geeks onto the bandwagon.

EVERYDAY PEOPLE? Non-geeks? Cosplay subculture'ites dressed as Stormtroopers handing out Firefox flyers...to other Akihabara district cosplay cafe'ers. How totally mainstream.

    Sigh. Everyday people, eh?

Sorry Robert, but there are no everday, non-geeks in Akihabara (except the tourists of course).
    Shops in Akihabara:
    1. computer parts shops
    2. anime subculture shops
    3. services catering to patrons of 1 & 2.
(oh, and the largest home electronics store i've ever seen)
I like what Joi is doing here, and its fun for the people involved, but its very much preaching to the converted.
People here will be asking "why change from opera/ie/safari/whatever?", not the "what's a firefox?" questions that need to be asked by, and hence get it accepted into the mainstream, everyday, non-geek world.
