Thomas Hawk’s photos from last night

by on August 22, 2006

The video camera in these photos gave away a little bit of what Thomas Hawk and I were doing. I was videoing him as he made photos. And, boy, was the night perfect for making a bunch of great images!

Hopefully my video comes out as well too. This will be part of PodTech’s new tech-oriented video show that’ll start sometime in September, not quite sure of the starting date yet.

You can see the originals here on Zooomr and he gives more details on the evening over on his blog.

  • Want to make them even better, try out the new Windows Photo Gallery in Vista
  • Tekpooler: yeah, that's pretty cool, but does that let you share photos with others? Does it do tagging? Does it do the new photoportal feature that Zooomr just shipped? Does it let you add a photo to a blog from that tool?
  • That golden gate bridge photo could not have been taken at a more spectacular moment in time
  • Thanks searchengines. We really did hit the GG Bridge just right last night. The timing on the lighting at dusk was perfect as the lights to the bridge were being turned on for long exposure timed shots.

Scoble got lots of great video of the change in lighting as it was happening that you'll see when he produces his show. We were lucky to be out there on a night when the bridge look especially stunning.

The clouds rolling in really added a lot of dramatic effect as well. I've taken thousands of shots of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges and last night both the atmosphere and the timing could not have been more perfect.
  • Tekpooler, I'm pretty excited about the new photo gallery in Vista and especially as it relates to Media Center. Robert's right though, I think Microsoft has kind of missed the boat with regards to a good online photo sharing service. Yahoo! got Flickr, Google's buidling out Picasa, heck even CNET's got Webshots (which they are working on a new release of as we speak to sexy the place up a bit), I'm not sure that Microsoft's ever really taken online photosharing seriously in terms of community not just hosting photos for blogs or IM. And I don't think private folder share type stuff really is the same thing as where photo sharing is going online.

Microsoft should commit seriously to developing something internally or buy and build out. Digital photography is becoming something more than just a thing for photogeeks. If you spend any time at Flickr meetups you'll find that the digital camera really is becoming a tool for people to connect their online and offline worlds. When you are the site that helps people do this there is tremendous gratitude and loyalty and that super sticky thing that keeps people coming back over and over and over again.

I am excited about tags in Vista though. Kristopher and I want to make sure that Zooomr imports photos as they are tagged in Vista directly into Zooomr. If you have a white paper or some kind of technical input that you might be able to provide us to ensure that MSFT's upcoming proprietary format for tags can be imported by us into the correct EXIF fields for tags we'd love to see that.

I've also traded emails with some of the folks on the Media Center team and once we get Zooomr a bit more stable we'd definitely also like to build out a 10" interfact and figure out a way to get it plugged into MCE. MCE is a great way to consume digital photography and will be an even better way in Vista... of course we probably need to get Zooomr's templating issues worked out with IE6 before we do that though... walking before running and all.
  • Beautiful photos, Thomas. I'm constantly stunned by your talent and your eye for composition. Zooomr sounds like an interesting project!
  • The shot of the Golden Gate Bridge is absolutely beautiful. I think that might have to make its way onto my desktop!
  • Quack: it's already on mine!
  • Beautiful photography. Stunning!
  • All I can say: Excellent photographs!!! Keep on doing such great stuff!
  • Thanks for blogging Thomas and for sharing your own experiences on your blog! Wish we had a bit more of that entrepreneurship here in southwest Virginia!
  • Brilliant bridge shots - wow. I've only met you (Robert) once, but I've read you alot and I think he really captured you in that second shot.
  • Pictures on your blog? WOW!!! Wait, no wonder. Those are some great shots. You should frame the shot of yourself for your wife.
