Indian BlogCamp gonna be bigger than TechCrunch

by on August 25, 2006

You all thought that Mike Arrington’s TechCrunch party last Friday was big? Wait until you see the BlogCamp in Chennai on September 9-10. I was trying to get there, but it just won’t work out (but I’ll be joining via video link).

How do I know it’ll be big? Because everything in India gets big almost instantly. Americans can’t understand the population density of places like India and China unless they visit. I know one guy, Anand, who runs a .NET user group. It hit 1,000 members in the first year. It took the user group in Silicon Valley several years to hit that level.

  • I second that. Besides, a huge chunk of the population is computer literate which helps it too.
  • At least, Scoble doesn't bad mouth India and Indians like almost everyone seems to do these days.

    Thanks! :)
  • Tim
Be sure to ask by a show of hands how many are using software without a license:

  • @Tim: Commenting without context. Good for you.
  • Tim, Timmyyyy!! India population : 1.2 billion, 27% legal is still oh let's say 300 million. US population : 330 million. You think the companies care?
  • Dileepa, it doesn't matter.
Sam, it is not all about percentages. If someone has to plan a product exclusively for India or China, they need to be sure that they are going to get a return.

No matter what off the topic a comment is, defending an illegal activity is a shame.
  • @jamespaulp: Who's defending illegal activity here? I didn't.
  • One of the ways to view it, is that if you use pirated software, it "might" affect the company's revenues which might affect compensation of employees and these employees migh be working out of india !!! So it affects india.. (and might be other countries as well)

Another way to see it is, if company wants cut down on expenses, they come down to india, same work is done (with good quality) at 1/10th of the cost. Benefit to india !!

I am sure few people are going to say "crap" after reading this, just a thought came to my mind after reading the other comments in the thread and I just jotted it down..

P.S Anyway I am against the use of pirated software and if you don't want to pay, search for the alternative in Open source :)
  • I agree with Dileepa. No one's defending any illegal activity. But you can't just comment on it and say that everyone there does it. Kazaa and Bittorrent users are mostly US/Europe based, Indians/Chinese don't have enough bandwidth to do such things. So, why just blame some people. Or is it because most programming jobs are going to India and we have people here sore about the competition?
  • Well, you don't need bandwidth to get pirated software. CD/DVD are dirt cheap these days. I don't think everyone is pirating. But what percent of people are paying? Considering volume of computers and developers and all techies, don't you think software sales in those countries being very high? Or are they all using open source software? If that is the case, they probably all are open source techies as well. That is not what we see.
  • I had a thought you had confirmed your visit. Its bad you won't be able to make it but hope to catch up with u on video.

  • Blogcamp is in Chennai which is about 300 kms from Bangalore - Silicon Valley of the East as they call it.

IMO - This can't be compared with TechCrunch as most of these bloggers are mostly casual or social bloggers and not techies.
  • Guess what we are a full house today and we had to say NO to a couple of sponsors owing to being late and we will not be able to do justice to them. Being one of the chief organizers of the event all focus is now towards delivering quality content and working towards smooth conduct of the event. Rest assure this is already a sell out Follow proceedings at http://orione.wordpress.com/2006/08/29/blog-cam...
