Patrick’s first Garage Band composition

Wow, it was only, what, a couple of weeks ago, but it already seems so far away. Probably cause of the startup life. Yesterday, for instance, started at 6 a.m. (we were giving a presentation at 8 a.m.). That went until 10:30. Onto see Maryam’s mom for a few minutes. Tried to catch up on email (totally failed, I’m now only answering about 10% of my email, sorry). Then met with a bunch of PodTechers, took some calls. Called Steve Ball, interviewed Tim Bray. Met with the Stanford students at 6 p.m., stayed at work until 9 p.m.

Whew. It’s almost like working at Microsoft. :-)

Anyway, I just saw Jan’s video come through that she shot at Off the Grid and remembered that Patrick had fooled around while we were there and made a musical composition on Apple’s GarageBand. She used that as the background for her video. We had a lot of fun. Too bad life can’t always be hanging out with creative people who like teaching my son about how to make his own music.

One thing about GarageBand that I like is that it encourages people to create their OWN songs rather than ripping off someone else’s music. It’s a lot more fun and, heck, if a 12-year-old can do it, so can we all!

Great point about creation. I feel that a lot of what Apple does is to empower regular folks to get involved, and to create. There is very little in mass media that encourages this – often companies just want you to consume.

I agree with the creativity thing. Nothing annoys me more when people dismiss inexperienced computer users saying that all they do is surf, e-mail and use office. Why shouldn’t the average user be able to create as well? It shouldn’t be hard. At least Apple is trying to make this tech accessible.

Is there a Windows compatible comparison to GarageBand?

Hehehe. The only thing I taught Patrick was that if you make something good and attach a proper license (he negotiated well I should add), folks will dig using it.

@ Dan – making is infinitely more fun than consuming. More fun is making stuff with other folks you respect. Try it and let us know how it goes.

Way to go Patrick! I sometimes use my son Hank’s music trax on the McVlog….and it makes me proud.

Keep the music flowing. You will go from Garage Band to Logic soon.

There are several products that it very similar to Garageband for Windows. My favorite is Acid which Sony bought from Sonic Foundry a couple of years ago. Acid comes in a number of different version, where Acid Pro has the most features and Acid Xpress is available for free. I think the first version was released in -98.

Does Acid Xpress do 1000′s of Loops, Midi-Instruments,100′s of Virtual Instruments, File-import/editing, Virtual Amps, 8-track Live recording, Automatic Ducking and Pro-standard realtime FX processing?

    In the One App?

Oh, I forgot unlimited tracks (as long as your processor can handle it), and track locking (in case it cant).

Do you think Vista’s new Garageband copy will?
