Scoble family news

Patrick just got home, found out there was an Apple battery recall (Maryam questioned “you just found out, MacBoy?”) and promptly said “gotta check if my battery was recalled.” Turns out it was. So, without skipping a beat he said “we gotta go to the Apple store.” His favorite words! Lemming!

Anyway, in other Scoble news, the other day Maryam and I were talking about what’s going on in Iran (she grew up in Tehran) and she told me a story of a college student that had been imprisoned for years and was near death due to constant beatings. She told me that his only “crime” was that the Economist put a picture of him in the magazine. I told her she should blog the contrast between my experience and his. She did, and it’s powerful.

In other news she told me about the latest blog dustup. Forbes magazine printed an article that said it was better not to marry a career woman and that pissed off tons of bloggers. So much so that Forbes pulled the article and then reposted it with a contrasting view. She gave her two cents on that article. Me? Career women are the best! Heck, if Maryam didn’t have a career I’d never have met her (I was on the interview team when we hired her at Fawcette). On the other hand, she managed to steal my job at Fawcette, so maybe that advice is sound. Food for thought.

Anyway, now Maryam is getting us to clean up the house. I hate moving chores (still have a few things to unpack).

  1. “we gotta go to the Apple store.”

Save yourself the trip: the apple support webpage is the only place you can get your replacement battery.

  3. And I think you have to do the battery replacement through the website not the store. Mine has to be replaced, too. Wonder if they are going to replace it with a refurb one.

I’m glad my wife enjoys being a mom with three young kids at home. I can go to work and know our kids are receiving the best care possible instead of outsourcing that to others.

It would make financial matters a bit easier possibly. But I’ll take my old Passat over your wife’s new BMW anyday knowing we’re doing what’s best for our kids. :-)

  7. I am in NYC getting my son set up at university (Fu Engineering at Columbia..yeah!) and we just installed Windows on his MacBook Pro.

By the way, the battery on this model doesn’t get recalled, butt the computer still runs hot.

It was an interesting experience installing Windows. First we needed to download the Mac beta “Boot Camp”, and update all the firmware. It took a while to find one missing bit of that, several days and some advice.

It helped to look up the updates from the Mac Support site and cross reference to my system preferences. I had missed an update from April for the boot rom.

After teh Boot Camp was ready to roll (it won’t work unless teh firmware is up to date), we went through the process carefully, partitioned the hardrive and did the install. We decided to partition off 16 gig for the Windows.

It was very strange to see Windows boot up on a Mac.

After about an hour and a half, Windows was set up, and with the instructions from Boot Camp we designated Mac OS as the default and it was back to normal.

Now, though, Hank has a windows OS on his machine that he can use for those programs that don’t work for the Mac. For instance, there is a Java coding program that is Windows only.

So now, he is prepared to handle whatever is thrown his way at Columbia. At least with his hardware.

I have a feeling that the computer will get the most use when he is doing his music on Logic Pro.

Robert, when Patrick gets to University age, I have a feling it will be a blast for you. It seems like he may be ready in a year or so.

  9. I already did the battery exchange for my MacBook Pro, despite DHL temporarily losing the shipment. Yesterday the AC adapter for my MBP died so I went to the Apple store today to buy a new one. I’ll try to get Apple to replace the old one so I’ll have a spare.

  11. So Patrick actually found a silver lining in the recall cloud? Good for him. It is cool that Apple (and Dell) stepped up to the plate on this. I just read a blog that calculated the Apple/Dell recall will get 60-75 percent of the bad Sony batteries out of the market. The question is, where are the other roughly 2 million exploding Sony batteries that have not been recalled to date?!?! Any ideas about this? Should we care?

Hey, at least the job stayed in the family. Better than having some stranger steal it, right? :)
