Skypecast on now

Get the new Skype 2.6 beta and join in with the SkypeCast. We already have six people on the cast. UPDATE: the test was a success. We had about a dozen people online and the quality was great. A great way to get a group of people together and talk about something.

One problem, though, was people entering who didn’t have headsets. Sometimes we’d get some weird feedback. Easily solved by muting them, but a bit frustrating. Also the interface could be improved a bit for asking questions via text so you don’t have to disturb the main chat.

It’s amazing this is free.

One thing I wish was for a “record this session” button so that I could record what we talked about and point you at that. Sorry, no recording of this one exists. Next time I’ll get my podcasting device out and record it, but next time I’ll have something to talk about.

Hey, speaking of which, next Tuesday Apple is having a special announcement and PodTech will be there, so maybe we should all get together next week after the announcement and get together and talk about it (no, I’m not gonna give you my predictions again. I’ve been burned by Apple once already).

I think there were other issues – for instance Skype logged me in to two different computers at the same time – so even though I had a headset, the ambient noise from the other computer was causing problems – so I dropped out of the chat.

Also, clicking on the link to the Skypecast you sent me during a Skype text chat crashed Skype several times – I had to manually join via your blog.

So even though I wasn’t “in the chat”, I did learn from it – kill Skype on one PC before signing in on another (not sure if this is just a beta issue, or something that always exists).

Also, there seems to be a bug in the link acceptance to a Skype chat – three times I tried, and three time the client died.

i also thought that skypecast needs some features that a bunch have gamers have figured out. With Teamspeak.org, you can see who is in shannel and who is causing feedback with the open mic being green next to the user that is causing it. Another feature that teamspeak uses that would be useful in Skype is a push to talk method or being able to use a leveler of sorts for voice activation. There was a lot of ambient noise on the call. You can also record to wav internally with TS. Skype needs and external recorder and when I set my camtasia up to record the audio, it lagged everyone real bad.

    Just my $0.37.

Robert, if you want to record a multiway chat, use iChat. Open GarageBand, and make a new podcast. Open iChat. Invite people into the chat. go back to GarageBand and hit record. You get a recording of each speaker as an independent track, so you can EQ and edit them individually.

    Hi Robert,

I don’t think you have to have the new Beta to join in with Skypecasts. You should be able to do it if you have Skype 2.5.

@Chris: I tried to join the Skypecast with Skype 2.5 and it failed. I believe it is a 2.6-only feature.

I had recently started hosting a monthly skypecast, and happened to find a very easy to use recorder for skype calls and skypecasts called PrettyMay http://www.prettymay.net/. Even with the free trial demo version, I could record my 1-hour Skypecast in 30-minute segments right into MP3 format. Very, very handy, and pleasantly surprised at its ease of use! I hope to be registering it soon. :)
