Dunn done is just the start for cleanup at HP

Patricia Dunn is gone from HP. PodTech was at the press conference and Catherine is working right now on getting up the audio from the press conference as well as a story about what she learned at the press conference although the story is already well out as you can see from Google News about HP. OK, that’s a start. Now it’s time to clean out the rest of the board. And fire the ethics officer who just wrote to his colleagues that he wished he didn’t ask about the legality of the situation — ethics officers need to learn that they BETTER stay on the right line of the law AND of our privacy. And, Mark Hurd too. He’s seriously tainted in this whole thing. He needs to go too.

HP needs a fresh start and a message needs to be sent to other corporate executives that they better not even THINK of abusing people’s privacy.

Oh, this is my first post from the fast lane of FWY 280 while Maryam is driving. Just another day in Silicon Valley. :-)

UPDATE: David Berlind has a podcast and report from the press conference up. PodTech’s is up now.

UPDATE 2: In CEO Hurd’s defense at least he was contrite and took responsibility. Something that Patricia never did. But the smell from this still remains. I doubt Patricia is the last one to go.

UPDATE 3: The ethics officer was fired, along with another employee.

    Patricia Dunn’s casual attitude towards this did rub me the wrong way. She seemed to think she didn’t do anything wrong and the end justified the means. Atleast, Hurd seems to have taken some responsibility. Although as you pointed out Robert, I did look at the email and now even he smells. Guess, it’s time for all of them to go.

    How come you are so concerned about HP (how many posts have you written about this already?), but not about much bigger issues pertaining to rights and justice? It looks like the Senate has just caved in to allow the Administration to sidestep the Geneva Conventions. These are the same people who were doing the illegal wiretapping. So now we have a government that flaunts privacy and due process and all you can say is that HP needs to clean up it’s act? Sad. No wonder the government gets away with it…

    David Kirkpatrick, Fortune senior editor, says that in addition to Dunn two senior managers at HP were also fired today.

    Actually, Kirkpatrick has a good perspective on this. Essentially, he says it’s not only about what’s legal, but about people in high places apparently not being able to discern right from wrong and having weak ethics.

    @11. So you want Geneva Convention protection to a group of people that don’t follow the rules of war and are not signators of the Geneva Convention? Why should they get protection when they themselves don’t abide by the Geneva Convention.

    As far as wiretapping, you do understand the Amendment says “UNREASONABLE”, right? So, if you get regular calls from Afghanistan or other locations where there are known terrorist cells, wouldn’t it be REASONABLE to suspect something?

    Personally, I love the fact these scum bags won’t get the protection of the Geneva convention. I’m all for whatever means we can use to get these guys to talk and ultimately save lives.

    You can be vocal without a blog, just in a smaller circle. So let me get this straight. Lying on the stand, and doctoring evidence, that’s okay. No moral problems, no ethics problems. Perfectly good leadership practice. Shows the troops the way to handle controversy.
