Happy Birthday Podcasting!

It’s the third birthday of Podcasting (Dave Winer explains). I should, once again, admit that my book got it wrong. Christopher Lydon did the first podcast. Naked Conversations gave credit to someone else.

Anyway, it’s amazing how big podcasting has become in just three years.

What’s your favorite podcast?

Daily Source Code, followed by Dawn and Drew and TWiT.

  2. Robert Scoble Says:

Rich: yeah, those are good ones.

  3. mossman Says:

Maccast is good and also the Today show from BBC Radio 4.

  4. Michael Markman Says:

TwiT, Morning Coffee Notes is eccentric, challenging, hilarious, and unlike anything else; Peter & Ryan’s Engadget podcast, Ask a Ninja, Onion, Onlinerz, and Jean Shepherd’s podcast (airchecks from his brilliant, never-surpassed radio monologs from WOR New York in the 60s and 70s). And from NPR… On the Media and Left, Right, and Center. And, if it qualifies, Ze.

  5. Keola Donaghy Says:

My votes go to An tImeall, a pioneering Irish language podcast which has morphed and is now also broadcast via traditional radio under a new name, and Bernie Goldback’s Podcasting In Ireland. Sorry, couldn’t pick just one.

  6. Tom Says:

    Madge Weinstein’s Yeast Radio

  7. Steven Lewis Says:

The Manners Cast from Texas keeps me polite in Australia.

  8. New Media in Australia » Blog Archive » Is podcasting dead? Says:

[...] I wrote an article for Pickle’s Podcast News, of which I’m the editor, about Apple’s attack on companies using “pod” in their company or product names. Podcasting is of course alive and thriving on its third birthday but what of the term ‘podcasting’ in light of Apple’s international blitzkrieg? [...]

  9. Bosko Says:

I must admit I don’t always agree with what Dave Winer writes but his take on the “podcast” trademark debate is spot on, and I think it’s fair to Apple.

As for my favorite podcast: Coverville! http://www.coverville.com/

  10. Richard Brownell Says:

I still think the pre-history of podcasting it important and understated by the geek community. My video game site was doing “audio columns” 4.5 years ago. The staff member I had doing them had his own site where he did “audio columns” and audio news updates 6-7 years ago. We barely knew what E3 was then, but he did regular updating. What’s the only difference between that and podcasting? The feed.

Feeds/RSS/whatever is one of the most misunderstood confusing concept on the web for most people (see that Yahoo study about orange icons, etc. and others). In reality, the only important part of podcasting for regular people is that it is audio (or video) and they can listen to/watch it.

Just my take. And no, I’m not saying I’m signifigant in any way to podcasting. Others were also publishing regular audio updates before we were.

    My favorite:

    NPR’s Wait Wait — Don’t Tell Me

I thought it was Adam Curry who coined the term “podcast”? But I guess not after reading:

  19. Len Edgerly Says:

I love the Slate podcast hosted by Andy Bowers. Even when he’s just reading a Slate article, his voice calms and energizes me at the same time. His interviews are even better, and the Friday Gabfest is terrific.

  20. Jan Kabili Says:

I love the Mac Cast. Adam is so knowledgeable, has a terrific voice (actually and artistically), and makes you feel like part of his community. I’m also partial to photoshoponline.tv — but of course.

  21. Robert Scoble Says:

    Jan: I love photoshoponline.tv too.

  22. Jeff Says:

Oh please. I was putting up audio (and video) programming on the Web in 1999. Just because it wasn’t pushed via an RSS feed doesn’t make it any less podcasting.

Unlike Winer, Lydon and others though, I’m not looking for someone to stroke me or give me credit. The technology involved doesn’t make it a new idea.

  23. Trent Armstrong Says:

The Rules RULES! Steven and Rhylla lay down social law with their fine Australian accents. They have a number of guests and cover topics that concern pretty much everyone.

  28. Craig Says:

I love the Mannerscast podcast. They cover all of the annoying things that people do and how best to combat their lunacy. I can’t listen when I run, because running and laughing don’t mix.
