Introducing ScobleShow

It’s 1 a.m. and the engineering team, me, and Valerie, are still working at the office. But the show is slowly coming up. The URL is at http://www.podtech.net/scobleshow/

Stuff is still broken, and probably will be for a little while longer.

But, enough is up that I should probably write an introduce you to what I’ve done and where I’m gonna go.

So, what’s the ScobleShow?

It’s a videoblog. This week it’ll be updated only once (today). Starting in about another week it’ll see a new post or two every day (five to 10 posts a week).

I hate rules. So I won’t stick with any here.

On this week’s show I have:

1) An interview with a CEO. Sun Microsystems’ Jonathan Schwartz.
2) A demo of a new product. JotSpot, which is an Enterprise Wiki service that you might like.
3) A creative segment called “Photowalking” where we follow around Thomas Hawk as he makes images. This is actually the first of four segments (the others will be up probably tomorrow — this was more than an hour alone, so had to break it up a bit).
4) An audio interview with a geek. Tim Bray, co-creator of XML.
5) A language war in my mom’s house at Off-the-Grid. Something fun to spark a conversation.
6) Mad mojitos at the Ritz. A conversation with two CEOs on the back deck of the Ritz in Half Moon Bay.
7) A tour of Printing for Less. This should be in Business Week. 8) SAP’s executive star Shai Agassi talking about business.

Anyway, the page isn’t the prettiest. I haven’t done cool audio leadins or funky music or gotten someone to do 3D wooshy video elements.

If you only had a little bit of time to check it out, I’d probably do the Photowalking segment. That was a lot of fun. I’m looking for more photographers to follow along, so if this inspires you and you’re a good photographer and you’d like to share your creative time, please send me email (robertscoble@hotmail.com).

If you’re an entrepreneur you’ll be inspired by the Printing for Less tour. That’s quite a remarkable business. Remember, Andrew Field, its CEO, is building that business out in the middle of nowhere. Notice how well he treats his employees (TRIPLE SCREENS!!! Show THAT to your boss).

Each of these is enjoyable, though. Even the demo, which comes across as a commercial (none of this content was paid for, by the way) taught me a lot. I’m looking for other companies to do that with.

What’s next? Well, this is really an alpha. I see a ton of stuff we need to do with the Web site. It’s not Channel 9 yet. I want to step up the quality of the interviews too, but that’ll be pretty hard cause these are all pretty good subjects.

That’s where you come in. This is in your hands now. Would love to know what you think, even if you think it sucks, and where/who/what you want me to film next.

UPDATE: If you could go and Digg it, I’d really appreciate it.

Robert, congrats on the show being up now, btw. I enjoyed the two I watched (Thomas Hawk and language wars). I don’t remember there being any info in the language wars about who those dudes were though – some background info would be nice.

Thanks Robert. I thought the Photo Walking episode came out really well. Looking forward to the next episodes in this series and doing more of these. It really was a lot of fun. I threw another photo of our walk up on Flickr today http://www.flickr.com/photos/thomashawk/253375694/ and have a complete set of the walk available in a SmartSet up on Zooomr here:

http://beta.zooomr.com/smartsets/thomashawk/1913 All the shots are avaiable in high res if anyone wants to download any of them.

Hope to add more shots to the Zooomr set in the next few days.

I really like the photowalking, interesting stuff. A pity I have to convert to Divx to watch it, takes a little time. Guess I have to blame myself for hating kwiktime so much…

    Robert,
You are poor man submitting own stories to Digg.

You used to talk about influencers (http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/2006/08/27/google-sticks-its-toe-into-enterprise-waters/ ) and how it’s good that geeks real your blog – not simply a dumb mass of newspaper subscribers.

If your new show was interesting – then somebody for sure will submit it to Digg. Unfortunately looks like you don’t believe in it’s quality.

Robert, I wish you well with your new show. The bleary-eyed meta video was a great way to kick it off with a personal touch.

Is there any way you can distribute these files with BitTorrent? These things are friggin’ huge!

I’m surprised more (any??) torrent-aware podcast clients don’t exist. You should be able to host an RSS feed of torrent files, and even run your own tracker–all for a lot less bandwidth than you’d burn serving up all these files yourself. And ultimately, everyone would get quicker downloads.

Liked the demo Robert! I still think you should be screencasting parts of it, but we can continue that debate. :)

    Hi Robert,

Any chance you could add a few additional formats to the list, please?

Preferably Flash Video embedded on the site so I can watch during my lunch break at work.

I also can’t play Quicktime on my PDA (another place I listen to/watch video/audio casts for my commute).

I’d give some feedback on what the show was like.. but err, well… I can’t watch it (for the above reasons).

    Cheers

Congratulations on the launch. Quite the explosion of content to get started with, too — nice choice.

I hope there’s been much rejoicing and active celebrating around your office this afternoon. :)

I’ve got democracy dumping videos to our MythTV setup in the livingroom (think open-source iTV :) ) and my wife and I watched two episodes from the couch tonight.

    A few thoughts:

    1) I’d really love to hear you better. You’ve invested in great cameras, please consider investing in some sort of audio upgrade as well (be it wireless lapel mics, or even just a simple external mic you can set on the table between you and your interviewee)

    2) This is going to be amazing!

Seriously, that was just about the only criticism I had. We watched the interview with the Sun CEO (very interesting to hear his take on open source Java and why Sun matters) and the JotSpot demo, which certainly caught my interest.

I’m a geek, so keeping me interested in these topics isn’t hard. The beauty is that Sara said “that looks very cool” after watching the jotspot piece, which means she was engaged and interested!

Great work and good luck! I think great things are ahead.

Loving the content, but I can’t hear everything. You have a volume issue. Fill the interview environment with 100 microphones, take all the audio files and convert them all to mono. There will be an echo, but I don’t care because at least I will be able to hear what is being said.
