Google’s lobby

by on October 20, 2006

Here’s a silent video (I was shooting some “B Roll” at Google the other day and thought it would make a fascinating video for you to watch). What is it? It’s the lobby of building 41 over at Google’s headquarters. It’s a little more than seven minutes long. What does it show? The cool screens where you can sit and watch random searches that are being done on Google right then. Check out the free juice for visitors, too!

The search terms are quite wild. Here’s a list of the ones that went by in the first few seconds or so of this clip:
capco stp
partidos por internet
rula San Juan-Calingasta
paintball gear
boneless pork chop recipes
calciomercato
www.monteprogeral.pt
mac excel training
entel movil
yahoo games
Zenu
cannabis
Luciana Salazar
dinheiro
limpias para mejorar la surerta
Honey Dunn
wa
TReid and company charlotte
veet
smith bend texas

and on and on it goes.

I guess you wrote about this before !!! or did i see it in someother website ..hmm
  • anand: I wrote about it before, but here's the video for the first time. I'm sure other people have put videos of the same thing up too. I haven't searched for those: http://blip.tv/file/89831

It looks interesting, but I'm boycotting sites that prompt me to run an ActiveX control (or any plugin for that matter). I'm not sure how YouTube & video.google play video (and I really don't care when I just wanna watch a video), but it's done without the prompt.
  • Keith: I'm using Firefox and it worked just fine. The picture links to a Quicktime video. The link here: http://blip.tv/file/89831 goes to a Web page with a Flash movie on it.
  • Hmm, this is really interesting. Do you think they have wordfilters to make sure dirty words don't show up on the screen during visits?
Kudos on this video, I could watch the searches run through all day. Glad it's not as creepy as the leaked AOL search logs.
  • Hmm, hopefully Google doesn't have a one for Gmail. "Visitors please, check the display on this wall: These emails have just been sent..."

    Just joking, of course.
  • I think the Google staff would get a good laugh out of watching some of the weird searches and if they did have that feature, googlemail.
That is making me paranoid now hahaha.
  • Shaun: yes, they filter out lots of nasty stuff, but occassionally something offensive will sneak through the filters due to mispelling, etc.
  • interesting enough... 1 search in italian, 2 in portuguese and 2 (maybe 3) in spanish.
Were all the search terms coming from google.com or from global google sites?

It would be great if we could get this feed real-time! I think it was available at one time but vanished for some reason. Dogpile does have a real-time search query monitor called SearchSpy. This would make for a cool widget in Vista.
  • Mariano: I'm not sure.
