Thank the Lord for RSS: I hate the new Valleywag design

I really really hate the new Valleywag design. Luckily I’ll never see it again thanks to RSS. Good luck to Nick Douglas. Interesting that yet another blog star of the Nick Denton network walked away (Peter Rojas walked away and went to Engadget, which ended up making millions).

It will be interesting to see how long the site lasts without him - and with that horrible 1996 design.

  2. Kevin Says:

That is the ugliest design for a tech oriented site that I have seen in a long time. I can’t believe they screwed it up so badly.

  3. Rex Says:

“Walked away.” Does someone know something we don’t?

  4. Robert Scoble Says:

Rex: yes. But it’s not my place to say. I’m sure the truth will come out eventually. He wasn’t fired, though.

  5. Kevin OKeefe Says:

I thought ugly ruled when it came to blog design. They just folllowed the Scoble rules on blog design. ;)

  6. DrumsNWhistles Says:

It’s that Ask.com ad on the left sidebar that is truly hideous. I’d read 100 paid-for posts just not to see that awful ad ever again.

  7. Rex Says:

Huh, Calacanis says Nickie is off to Podshow.

  8. TDavid Says:

So next Douglas does a video and works for you at Podtech.net, Robert? ;)

  9. Robert Scoble Says:

Rex: I heard he’s off to Revision 3. He isn’t coming to PodTech (that I know of).

  10. Robert Scoble Says:

Kevin: ugly does rule, but only if it’s readable.

  11. Brian Says:

    Yikes

  12. Uncle Su Says:

OMG banana babanana! Its both ugly AND unreadable! Let Steve Jobs teach that website something about typography! Hideous… Is that the Halloween theme or something they’re trying to emulate?

  13. Brandon Wood Says:

Ouch! You aren’t kidding, that is one ugly design. But as you point out, that is the beauty of RSS. With some of my favorite sites, it would likely be weeks before I noticed a design change.

I hate the design of most of Gawker sites now. I was so pissed when they ruined Lifehacker. Now Valleywag. And the worst thing is they don’t listen to their user’s feedback. The only great redesign was Gizmodo.

The funny thing is Engadget and the Weblogs Inc. blogs all look fantastic after redesign. Hrmm I guess there’s always been a subconscious reason Engagdet comes before Gizmodo in my bookmarks.

Also, very sad that Nick’s gone. Double the bad news. Anyway, thank goodness for RSS indeed.

  15. Allen Sligar Says:

Yeah, I actually emailed him directly about the font on the site, its pretty bad, but the design….it gave me a nervous disorder..

  16. daniel Says:

oh, yes Robert that site is butt ugly.

Green can be a sad and ugly color with the perfectly ugly design.

    makes me want plain text.

  17. quack Says:

I’m with you Robert, that is a bloody awful redesign. What the hell was wrong with the old one? RSS truly is a godsend.

  18. kelly Says:

Valleywag has a website too? That is impressive.

  19. JIm Louderback Says:

absolutely. It’s ugly! I only went to the site because of your post — I read it via RSS too..

What were they thinking? Where’s Nick? Ouch!

  20. RyanB Says:

    That just kills my eyes…
