An hour with Ross Mayfield, wiki pioneer

by on December 6, 2006

I’ve gotten around to a lot of Wiki companies lately. The market for them is white hot. One of my interviewees, Wikia, just got funded by Amazon. Another, JotSpot, got bought by Google.

So, to wrap up the group of Wiki interviews, I went to Ross Mayfield, founder of SocialText, which is the first company that I saw try to make a business out of wikis. We spend an hour talking about a bunch of things.

Other wiki-oriented interviews I’ve done:

Atlassian
JotSpot
Wikia

Well, speaking of wikis, and knowing you love blogs, you should check out http://pbwiki.com/. Involved in that company is Ramit Sethi, who runs a great personal finance/entrepreneurship blog at http://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/.

I'll keep reading if you keep posting Robert, I really like having your commentary in my feed reader. Thanks.
  • OK so the hype of wikiaphyles may be over the top, but lets be frank if you either have a huge user base.. Wikipedia, or a niche market such as espionage... it is one very intelligent approach to information management... the crunch comes with the inbetweenees... hey Robert! how about looking at comparisons, differences across all these wiki's ... doesn't need to be a PHD, your regular cheerful approach is fine :-)
  • Ryan: I did check out PBWiki. I liked Wetpaint's approach better, but would love to interview Ramit.

Comparisons? That'd be good to do.

Help! I need your wiki admin to move this wiki page to as main page. I made a mistake posting your bio wiki page under a dummy test page named testtest.

Even sign in as wetpaint user won't allow me to move the wiki page around.

Your written bio is done and prepared by our volunteer team. Add your press release photo with landscape and protrait layout.
  • What a intersting notes you have mention here.
    well done keep it up.
I Need your help will you provide it?
  • Bess
I figure out your team member may not have permission to move pages within wiki. I add a new page with bio and photo under Home. Contributor (user who signup the wiki account the first time) will have permission to delete, move or rename pages. It would be easier to delete pages than moving it.
