Twitter — hot service in SF, New York, and now London

Sam Sethi (of UK TechCrunch) had a breakfast last week in London. What did we all talk about? Twitter. Seems it was the topic of conversation on LunchMeet too!

My problem with Twitter? I keep forgetting to do it. Evan Williams, founder of the company that did Twitter, sent me email telling me that there’s a setting that’ll turn on a reminder. Oh, that’s what I need. More reminders that I’m behind. I just need to look at my inbox to remember that!

But, I do love Twitter for some reason. I can log in there and see what all my friends say they are doing.

  • Pretty interesting idea, but it'll only take off if enough friends are using it, and if there are some desktop clients for quick posting. Otherwise, I'll probably keep using my instant messenger custom status feature.

    Do you really need a new service for this? Why can't you update your status on one of the chat messenger's status box which you can be logged in even from mobiles?
  • PS -- that's what I thought to, initially. Except that there's an API, which means that people have already written clever Dashboard widgets, scripts that monitor yout Xbox gamer tag, tools that read your IM status, etc. already. The API makes all the difference.
  • ps: chat messengers don't keep history around like blogs and like D.W. says, it has an API. Also, maybe I don't want to download a damned piece of software just to do this.

    Why have you titled this article "hot service in SF, New York, and now London" ? Twitter is a worldwide service just like most things on the internet. Why pick those three cities? London isn't the only place in the UK you know, just like there are more places in the US than San Francisco and New York. Very strange title indeed.
  • Wait...what??? This is the first I'm hearing of Twitter and the like. The services are ridiculous.

    Thank heavens I only arrived late at breakfast then...twitter is such a bloody silly name, I won't use it for that reason alone :)

    Now talking about the next steps for video - that was much more interesting I thought.

    Seems like your liver survivevd the day....
