The Zeitgeist of Scoble

Wow, a 15-year-old did a huge analysis of my blog. Some of the things he’s found:

Since moving to WordPress I’ve typed 2,103,816 characters.
Average of four characters a word.
4706 characters a day.
464,078 words total.
192 words a post.
Compare that to Shakespeare who only wrote 884,647 words.
2405 posts.
I’ve linked to 4,992 pages. 4321 of them unique. Spread out across 1858 domains.
Two links a post, 86% of the links being unique.

Interesting, thanks Yuvi!

Wow, Yuvi may have stumbled upon the next super geek meme.
I will have to subscribe to his blog just to find out what else he has found.
With kids like this, the future is assured.

  2. Luke Gedeon Says:

Sounds like we need to a start a blog that gives a daily dose of 5 posts at about 200 words each from Shakespeare.

  3. Stefan Constantinescu Says:

sounds like people will do anything to get mentioned on your blog

i’m all for analytics and stats, but besides being cute how is this information valuable?

  4. kystorms Says:

The value of this information is that this young man is showing us that the young are not only very smart, but are thinking like adults. I feel better knowing its not all playstation games, myspace posts and BF4E cell phone numbers rumbling through their heads.I have three girls who are early teens, I think I may have them take a gander at this young mans posts, try to stir their academic juices! Great Post Mr. S :-)

  5. Alfred Thompson Says:

RE: Your word count and Shakespeare’s count. The obvious jab is about quantity v. quality. But honestly that’s not fair. The difference is in the editing, the purpose/goal and the audience. The difference is between words that are written for today (short term time sensitive value) and the words that are written to last a long time. Apples and oranges.

  6. yeahsurewhateverok Says:

I bet the bard’s average word was longer than 4 characters…

    ;o)

  7. Michael Markman Says:

Do we have the evidence to know how many words Shakespeare wrote? Did he do rough drafts? Did he write letters? But you certainly beat the bard on number of links.

  8. TAG Says:

Shakespeare has invented over 1700 of English language words including torture, rant, compromise, noiseless, advertising, critic, pedant.

How many words have you invented ?

  9. Robert Scoble Says:

TAG: I never claimed to be Shakespeare.

  10. Varanusz Says:

I agree with Alfred. Shakespeare’s 850 000 words thet we know nowadays are not the written ones, but the words that are still available after ~500 years.

  11. Ramblewords » Blog Archive » The End of the Year that Came Before The End of The Year Says:

[...] And Google officially joins the list of blogs that have put up end of the year posts before the end of the year. Other blogs of note being Scoble, who to be fair, only posted it because somebody else did the leg work for him, Boing Boing, Lifehacker not once but twice, and hundreds of others around the world. Doesn’t anybody wait until after the new year starts to gather and post all this data? Google even released their overall zeitgeist for 2006 and surprised everybody by putting bebo above myspace for the most searched term. Then they came out later and clarified the decision to do a little manipulation so that sex didn’t show up 10 times in a row. [...]

  12. Michiel Says:

“Compare that to Shakespeare who only wrote 884,647 words”

yeah, that doesn’t sit well. What are you saying? That you choose quantity over quality? That in a few hundred years time people are going to be learning these blog posts in school and performing them badly on stage? (Bwahahaha!)

And with all due respect, what meaningless statistics. How about top word frequency? Most egrarious spelling and grammar mistakes? (Personally, I hate the ‘But, …’ start of a sentence which you do frequently, very ugly) Least used letter and/or word? If you are going to statistical analysis you might as well get some fun facts.

  13. Juha Says:

Once you start blogging in longhand, I’ll buy into just a tiny bit of the Shakespeare comparison, Rob. :)

  14. TAG Says:

Robert: I’ve not claimed you are Shakespeare too. I’ve simply put some statistics about Shakespeare and asked for similar numbers from you ;-)

  15. Corinne Says:

Michiel - a 15 year old wrote a program. tested it. rewrote it. It’s most likely a work in progress. I’m sure Yuvi will get around to posting the other bits and pieces.

  16. Jacob Says:

Well I for one am now looking forward to Robert using iambic pentameter over the next few weeks :P

  17. Bruce Boughton Says:

Man I can’t see for all the high horses in here! They’re just some neat facts and it’s a certainly an achievement for a 15-year old to produce them. I can see a long future with Her Majesty’s National Statistics (http://www.statistics.gov.uk/) for Nuvi :p

  18. Yuvi Says:

    Thanks a lot scoble:D

BTW, that one wasn’t big at all! The one I’m goanna post in a few hours time is the big one. It took me some 4 hours to write, and includes 22 charts, 3 tables and the prediction that if you hadn’t joined podtech, they would’ve gotten only 17 links now:D

@TAG: He invented atleast one word: brreereport:D Though not sure if it’s entered any dictionary…

People, the Shakespeare jab was supposed to be a joke at how bloggers write so much. That’s it. :D
