AOL lets you sell your video

I’m not planning on doing this — anyone want to buy boring, long videos with Web 2.0 CEOs? Heheh.

But, Paul Colligan reports that AOL is letting people sell videos now.

The problem with buying videos is that Netflix is renting me HD-DVDs for a few bucks each. Getting anything close to that quality would require one heck of a great Internet connection and a big hard drive. Not to mention that Hollywood will not give me movies without DRM attached.

So, that leaves stuff that the rest of us can do. What kind of Internet video would anyone ever want to pay for?

Porn. Even then you can get so much for free so why pay?

Anything else? I can’t think of anything that I’d put a few bucks down to view.

I can see people paying for good educational resources.

Lessons from master instructors. Hey, if someone will pay $1.99 for an episode of Desperate Housewives, why wouldn’t they pay $1.99 for a 5 minute lesson from martial arts master Stephen K. Hayes?

Business Intelligence? Being there when a new store opens, asking customers on the street about certain brands etc. I suppose it’s about broadcasting around a niche angle.

Information wants the marketing and distribution required to give it value in a marketplace that wants to embrace it. Sometimes the transaction is “this great content brought to you for a few seconds of your time for this word from Seagate.” Sometimes the transaction is $1.99 for an episode of BSG so I can watch it, without commericials (ever tried to fast forward through commericials on a scroll wheel?) on my iPod on the plane. Sometimes it’s way to much money for a college education. The list goes on.

Scoble, I’d pay for your show.

Well, I wouldn’t pay squat for ANY video online, no matter what it is. On the other hand, if YouTube, AOL, or anyone else would let me register, make a favorites list of videos and then, when I get enough to want, burn them all to a DVD and mail it to me for a price… I’d give it some stong thought.

Likewise, I have a niece who’d buy dvd after dvd of clips of her favorite singers from YouTube.

Smart, pithy stand-up comedy. Not the kid of thing I’d watch over and over, so I don’t want a $20 DVD. But I’d pay a couple of bucks to watch the kind of alt-comics you don’t see so much on Comedy Central, especially if I knew the money was going directly to the comic in question. Would AOL be where I go to get it? Doubtful.

Second the instructional videos. The “how to…” set up a video blog at http://www.freevlog.org is awesome. I’d happily pay for a clear, video walk-through of some of WordPress’ more confusing set-up back-end stuff…
