If you had $10,000 to spend at CES…

What would you get?

I’ll be asking people just that next week. Be prepared.

UPDATE: No, I’m not giving away $10,000.

  • The new Korean HD-DVD that plays both formats.
  • Put it all on black and let it spin! I'll pay you back.
  • Or go to that special area for uber-high end audio where a turntable cost $45k+
  • The first real iTV I can find and one of these Terrabyte hard drives I'm reading about.

Hopefully their would be plenty of change. *grin*
  • An assistant to carry fresh shoes and socks for me to change into, as well as to collect literature and goodies. A private car and driver so I could avoid cab lines.
  • A Pony. Of course.
  • Ric
If I had $10,000 I would buy a new domain and then give it away as part of OpenDomain
One I have been looking to grab for Dave: OPML.Com, but there are lots of other great ones out there
  • Chris Weiss
A $10,000 Vegas hooker. Consumer electronics devaluate faster than McDonalds' French fries, but a night with a $10k hooker will always be worth $10k.
  • A copy of the complete attendee list with contact information. :) If I had money left over, I'd but brand new cell phone, my current one is long in the tooth.
  • A plan ticket to MacWorld, and then spend the remainder on what I find there ;)

I kid...we will be at CES in full force.
  • 2 30 inch displays and a wicked fast computer

    x60 tablet
  • There's this blonde over at the chicken ranch ...
  • $10k doesn't go as far as it once did. Michael's got the right idea with the support staff to make the experience more pleasurable. An assistant (or two) to carry my stuff, talk to people I don't want to talk to, drive me around to avoid the taxi lines, and stand in line while I relax with a long drink.

As far as hardware, maybe a B&K Reference Home Theater component stack. Anything else would force me to rebuild the media room at home and that $10k wouldn't cover what I want to do down there..
  • Juan
I wouldn't spend $10,000 at any one place short of a house. Buying huge screen TVs is ludicrous and a waste of one's resources. Why not invest it for your future. The way social security is going, we're likely not going to get any.

I'm almost 40 years old, and I'm worried I will not be able to save enough money between now and when I retire. I don't want to be working in my 60's unless I absolutely have to. Unless I win the lottery... (incluide obligatory lightning strike chances here).

Everyone here should read Dave Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover". Even if you're not in debt, there are some great tips on how to save money -- and they work.

    Think before you spend, folks...
  • LayZ
I'd drop it off at the local Habitat for Humanity office.
  • A really nice turntable. Vinyl still kicks ass

A B&O bluetooth headset. Well, only if I can try it. The truth is, all BT headsets are designed to work only in quiet rooms by people talking kinda loud. I.e. they all pretty much suck, and they should be paying ME to use the things, crippled as they are.

Ooh...I know...I bet Gibson would be there. I could get me a SG Supreme in all three colors, and a Flying V. Mmmm...Gibson Guitars.
  • The best thing I could afford (if anything) from Nelson Pass (from Pass Labs).
  • Spend that to *get* there:D
  • Pay bills, then a new Dell laptop

    Guy
  • Zian
I'd dump the money into a money market account.
  • Ooohhh ... think how many corn dogs and french fries that would buy!

Seriously though, if I had to spend it at CES, I'd probably buy 2 home entertainment systems - 50in LCD for the family room and 60in for the basement. Some nice speakers, receivers, and $10K would be gone in no time.

Otherwise, I'd give it to Leukemia Society or something.
  • Russ Henry
Way to go Layz. You found the way to take it with you.
  • I'd spend it on cigarettes and alcohol
  • Hmmm... another 30" display and some BIG hard drives + some wireless security stuff / cams :-)
  • LayZ
@22. The $10K would likely be gone with the 60" display. Unless quality wasn't a factor.
  • Prostitutes and Mars Bars
  • Brian Hoyt
    1080p 3LCD front projector and a HDMI 1.3 reciever.
  • Keith Knutsson
I would have to also say I would buy stocks in google. Maybe invest more in my Keith Knutsson webpage. Or purchase an HD-DVD player.

    Keith Knutsson
  • Dave Ramsey and his baby step plan are the way to go, baby! The sooner joes and jills deep-six their debt, the better things will be for them.
