Sometimes I need an hour away from the computer…

Jason Calacanis, founder of Weblogsinc.com and Engadget.com, in an open letter to me: “At this point you’re basically slandering them and spreading lies. You’re acting like a spoiled jerk and as your friend I feel the need to tell you that.”

I just took a couple of hours away from the computer flying down to Demo and spent most of that time thinking about this and I have to admit that the past four days have not been my best professionally. So, I’m going to pull back here, and hope we can all shake hands here at the Demo conference and get on with giving our respective audiences the best content possible.

  1. Yes, quite time and reflection always lead to good things. Everyone should slow their day down and spend some quiet time, the rat race will still be there when ones gets back.

  3. I see the intent, but personally, I’d have an issue with a friend calling me “a spoiled jerk” or any name, really. Hard to have a respectful discourse when the name-calling starts.

  4. You know, I don’t normally get sucked into this kind of drama – but it does indeed seem like you are eating a lot of crow these days, Robert.

Usually, when friends fight, both of them apologize. You have done that. They haven’t – unless I am missing something?

I think you are handling this very well – and focused on the right thing – shaking hands and moving on. Hopefully everyone can do the same. Jeesh!

If only I had this much drama going on my own site, I’d be raking in the dough! ;)

  7. Everyone has a rough time every so often, I think it’s healthy. You learn take some s**t, learn, grow, and move on to be better than you were before.

    You rock Scoble. Keep goin!

  9. Robert, anyone who blogs with a high level of passion and frequency is bound to have this happen. There’s just no way to stay on top of your game 7x24x365 and I hope people realize that. I’m not defending you in the situation, but I agree with the approach you’ve outlined above. Hopefully everyone can move along from this. Have fun at DEMO!

  11. Jason Calacanis has stolen my drawing, removed copyright text, didn’t provide any link, and placed it on his (of WeblogsInc) server. This drawing still is there:
    http://www.weblogsinc.com/common/images/4463693158292347.GIF?0.8112354527175495

So apart from lying about me and slandering me he is also a thief as I proven above. Yet he dares to attack Scoble just because he pointed out that Engadget is not behaving properly.

I repeat: http://mobilitytoday.com is blacklisted by Engadget – why Peter Rojas denies that such thing as blacklist of Engadget exists? Why Peter Rojas pretends that he treats all equally etc. All lies! Why Chris Ziegler from Engadget steal stories from my site without giving credit or via link?

Think about it: Calacanis keeps stolen intellectual property on his server. This is what kind of guy he is.

  13. From a time management point of view you have to relax at least for one day from this type of woek and stress.

You and your friends at http://www.podtech.net are doing a fantastic job. Just saw the two movies about intel fab, this reminds me of a speech by Carvor Mead http://www.manhattan-institute.org/html/wl1987.htm
    and a graph http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=%5EDJI&t=my&l=on&z=m&q=l&c=

As Bill said in the interview, there are fantastic times coming up.

It’s always good to calm down, and think things through. However, I also still believe you had valid points in your initial argument, even if they were not presented in the most politically correct way. I think Kevin Tofel is 100% correct, and that that is one of the great things about the blogosphere – it may not be pretty, but it’s real. And I think it’s the sign of a good friend that they CAN call you a spoiled jerk – we all behave badly at some point or other – and still be friends.

  16. @8,

Technically, since the comic is about him, you’d have one hell of a time making that stick in any court.

I hate the term intellectual property — it’s a farce. Go and read some of what the Free Software Foundation has to say about the term, and if you have a modicum of understanding about copyright/copyleft, you’ll understand they are right on.

Even Europe is moving away from the term, since it’s falacious.

  19. Robert,

You are on the go almost 100% with tech. If you’re not at work, your fooling around with your son and his tech stuff. You eat, breathe, and live tech.

It gets old after a while. I recently moved to a small western town after working hard core tech jobs for 8 years. I left a 6-figure job for one making a third of that. I’m happier than I ever thought I’d be. No commute, no traffic, no horrible staff meetings, no dealing with customers, etc. Back to the basics. Amen. Amen. Amen.

Robert, you need to take your wife and get away for a couple of weeks. Just you and her. No Internet-enabled devices. No mobile phones. No contact with the outside world. Get on one of those cruise ships that caters to those who like sailing the old-fashioned way. Wooden ships, iron men. No TVs, no Internet, no dancing girls, no buffets capable of feeding half of Africa. Do it. It’s fun, and you get to breathe and enjo yourself and your wife – just you two talking and enjoying the weather and the ports of call. Use and Internet cafe every couple of days just to say hi, but leave it at that. No blogging. Just get off the radar. You’ll thank yourself and your wife will thank you. It will make your marriage stronger, even if you already have a rock-solid marriage.

  21. @9: Jason Calacanis is a bully with no morals, and slandering other people and stealing content are reasons of his financial success. Now he is so self-sure of himself that he has proper laywers etc that he can spread any lie, any slander, steal any content and nobody can do anything.

Scoble is a hero to stand up to these content thieves from Engadget and WeblogsInc! Now Calacanis is doing similar trick as he done against Steven Gillmor: he is bullying Scoble into submission and into going away and deleting comments etc. You will see soon Scoble submissively issuing big apology to overlords from WeblogsInc/Calacanis-land/Engadget-content-thieves.

I wonder where friends of Scoble are now when these evil people attack him with slander just for pointing out some “strange” practices.

Never give up, never surrender Scoble. If you let Calcanis bully you by his tricks (what destroyed Steven Gillmor already) then you Scoble will also end up as laugh stock of Calacanis – as Gillmor ended…

  23. @12 Commic Strip Blogger:

Indeed. However I never use Engadget or Weblogs Inc. I have use for either of them since they make gods out of mere toys. I use a single laptop computer and a single printer. I own one phone, a mobile.

  25. We all learn from our mistakes… hopefully! In this case your motivations were good, but you got some of your facts wrong. You quickly responded to feedback, and corrected your mistakes. And then you did several rounds of mea culpas. Saying that “…you’re basically slandering them and spreading lies…” is more than a little over-the-top. You didn’t deserve that. You learned from your mistake, maybe Jason will learn from his.

  27. Not sure if anyone else has made this observation, but it seems that your online demeanor has changed ever since you went on that John Edwards junket. Only been reading your blog for a couple of months and don’t really “know” you well enough, but that’s my two cents for what it’s worth.

  28. @15,

    Fred,

This is why I don’t blog. I’ve got an opinion like everyone else, but unlike Scoble, I’m not a mea culpa guy unless I really do something stupid. I’m an extremist with some of my views, and I just don’t want to have to justify myself at every turn, so I’m smart enough to not even attempt it.

Living in the public eye like Robert does is bound to get one in trouble at some point along the journey. It’s unavoidable.

  33. Friends don’t write friends hateful open letters. Friends pick up the phone and say “hey buddy, what’s up, bad day?”
I agree you went off the handle a bit, but for fairly legit reasons.
People are allowed to blow up. Just maybe a little too much info in the blow up. Way to man up and admit that maybe you went overboard.
You continue to have my respect and eyes on your blog. Keep at it!
hope to see you at SXSW.

  37. Comic Strip Blogger (a.k.a. Jacek Rutkowski):

You have a lot of nerve attacking Jason Calacanis and Peter Rojas when it is in fact YOU who is generally considered to be the craziest and most slanderous individual on the Internet. Your podcasts and poorly-drawn comics are full of maniacal rants and hate speech, which is probably why Microsoft has just as much distaste for you as Nokia did. Remember Beattie? Remember JacekWatch? It is you, sir, who is a thorn in the side of the blogosphere, and it is you who should be apologizing to the tech community for your relentless trolling and spamming since the days of BBS. Let’s hope there really is a Hell, Jacek, because that is the only appropriate place for an ugly, mean, hate-filled man such as yourself.

  39. @24: you are a deluded fool and liar. Besides: I have not been stealing content like Calacanis and Peter Rojas’ Engadget have been doing. Thinking that I can have big influence on blogosphere only shows how totally obsessed with myself you are – just because you are direct competitor to myself in your writings. At least I write as myself pointing out to my blog that identifies me, and you still are hiding behind anonymity. Microsoft has distate? Another lie: I am getting interviews, podcsats and lately alos invitation to the even at the conference next month.

  41. @ Robert Scoble: suggestion: I agree with Hugh MacLeod that anonymous comments should be forbidden. I suggest introduction of registration to comments on your blog! You have big traffic site so it is reasonable move to get rid of anonymous people who don’t stand for their words.

    1. Believe me, no one in their right mind would consider your crappy, almost illegible sites to be any sort of “competition.”

    2. If Microsoft likes you so much, then why are you a topic of ridicule at each and every Mobius conference? Even MS employees get in on the fun. If Microsoft respects your contributions to the Windows Mobile community, then why are you not — nor will you ever be — a VIP?

    3. Where exactly do you identify yourself as Jacek Rutkowski on the Comic Strip Blog?

    4. If you are such a legitimate blogger, why do you stalk people all the way across the world to the point where they have to contact local authorities? Please explain how harassing other writers with relentless phone calls is in any way acceptable.

    5. Of course I wouldn’t leave my real name when calling out a known stalker: you’re batshit crazy, friend.

I may not be a professional in the sense you are, but I do aspire to be a man of business in a few years, and I completely agree that where you were going is not the best route for you — or your readers.

I understand the need to out lash and let it all out sometimes, but I feel that it got a bit out of hand and I commend you for taking responsibility and trying to move on and make things move forward.

I hope the people you lashed out towards do the right thing and forgive you and move on professionally.

I will continue to read and support you, even though you haven’t a clue who I am :).

    Good luck.

  53. Robert, I have 2 points to make. Go back to Naked Conversations. I think that the point was made that there will always be things like this done. You can’t please everyone. You have to let stuff like this just roll off and not let it effect you. Second, I think in a weird way Jason was trying to be a friend. Sort of in the weird way that a friend will always tell you that you have something in your teeth, when no one else will. I have found that when situations like this occur, the best thing is to leave it alone; like you did, then call the person, or meet him at Demo and go have a beer.

  57. I remember the first time I really screwed up with something I posted on my blog. Maryam helped me figure out how to fix it and, after I apologized, things worked themselves out quite nicely. It wasn’t easy though.

They always say that to err is human and to forgive is divine. But they always seem to forget about how hard it is to apologize and admit you’re wrong.

So kudos for doing that :-)
