Listening to Dave Winer’s talk to NPR types

We’re playing Dave Winer’s talk to NPR types yesterday on the car stereo as we drive up to Vancouver. We’re only a few minutes into the talk and already it’s a great talk. Dave Winer at his visionary best. How do you judge interesting talks? I judge them by “did it cause conversations at parties away from the event?” This one did, which is why we’re listening now. He’s talking about things the podcasting industry should do.

Comments

  1. I judge them by “did it cause conversations at parties away from the event?”

Only in your blog bubble Robert. Outside of that, the conversation doesn’t exist.

  2. If my mom found it interesting, then that would mean Dave has some serious mojo, ’cause she’s been dead for nigh-on ten years now :-P

The point is, don’t confuse your little bubble with the real world. It isn’t. The fact that the non-HD game consoles are outselling the HD ones should be proof of that.

  3. Obama and Clinton will dogfight each other into a corner, which is only going to serve to further disenfranchise the electorate.
The question is, does a “fringe” candidate have the temerity to push the blogosphere as a truly viable political tool?

  6. Why didn’t I know you were coming to the Northern Voice conference? Because I’m way behind in my reading, I guess. I would have said hi.

Maryam has the coolest glasses, btw. But you know that already.

  8. As I listened to it, Dave, whom I have great respect and affection for, was much too defensive, did not listen well and much to often put himself in the position of lecturing radio professionals on how they should do their job, when he never claimed to has any knowledge of producing for radio. This was not his finest hour. Especially with the “Music from Hearts of Space” producer. Doesn’t Dave remember that guy from KPFA and KALW? Doesn’t he think that that guy, who has been producing progressive audio for over 35 years might have a something to say? Dave cut him off with some false issue about streaming and downloading, he never found out what the guy was getting at. I’d would have liked to hear his point. Perhaps it would have provoked an intelligent analysis from Dave or Doc. I have to wonder why you, Bob, are so uncritical of Dave, he’d benefit from more help from his friends. Dave is a brillent guy, but he is not always paying attention.

  10. Dave cut someone off? Never!

Listen to the mp3 player interview with Calcanis and Rojas (was it him?). Dave cut off Rojas (or whoever) again and again.

  12. Steven Hill was talking about refrigeration. Mr. Winer was talking about selling ice. When the cloud happens it will be the demise of RSS. Which explains why he did not want to adhere to his original thesis of promoting civil dialogue.
