Flight tracking
We’re about to hop on yet another plane, this time from Seattle to San Jose. One problem is that the flight trackers that Google points to generally suck. Buzz was raving about a new flight tracker he found, Flightstats, which is much better. Our plane is running late, which is why I wanted to track the flight.

Hey Scoble, I think they are based out of Portland. So, next time you are up in the Northwest, maybe you can get them on camera. Yes, this site is excellent.

Not sure if you saw this one also. I think Doc Searls just pointed to it a few days ago. Way cool. http://flightaware.com/

Excellent find Robert - it covers Australia too (and seems accurate and up-to-date), which is even better.

Robert, between sites like Flightaware, weather.com and portable GPS many of us now have more technology than the average airline employee…yet as I describe below, not sure we are taking advantage of all the data…

All well and good if you’re at your PC or Mac. When you’re in the airport you need something lighter weight. Try these on your mobile’s browser:
Flightstats Mobile: mobile.flightstats.com
United: ua.flightlookup.com
Kayak (simplest and fastest): http://www.kayak.com/moby/
IMO the most fun PC flight tracker is FBOWeb’s Google Earth tracker: http://www.fboweb.com/fb40/pu/info/gep.aspx

Hey Robert, if you can’t get to your computer but have your phone handy, you can text the Airline Name and Flight Number to 4INFO (44636) to get back live flight status information. For example, text “UNITED 1583″ to 4INFO (44636). More on mobile flight search here: http://www.4info.net/howto/flights.jsp

[...] Scoble points to a newish US based flight tracking service Flightstats.com. My first thoughts were: why bother checking the site out, most US based sites don’t track Australian flights. I was wrong, not only do they track Australian flights, they also compile historical data on flight times and rate it. In my experience Qantas has a terrible track record in flying just about anywhere on time, but having said that most of that experience is out of Perth Airport. Virgin Blue on the other hand in my own experience has been brilliant, indeed it’s the only airline I’ve ever flown where the flight took off early! Yep, they actually went around the terminal in the very early days when they had 1 flight a day ex-Perth and would tell everyone that if they got on the plane quickly enough, they’d take off early…that one flight left 15 minutes early [...]

now if only planes had wi-fi on board you could track yourself :) I’m off to Australia on Saturday. Care to track me :)

Thanks for the great comments everyone! We are pleased you like our services. In fact we are located in Portland, OR - look us up sometime you’re in town (hopefully your flight will be on time!). We are really excited about FlightStats Mobile, hopefully we will soon be able to use mobile devices on all flights, be able to track our current flight and get updates on our connecting flights. Thanks again and Happy Travels!

Yes! I was looking for a flight tracking site as well and it hooked me up with this blog post! Quite impressive, actually! I think FlightStats is great - at least so far - this is my first time using it. It has helped tremendously in knowing if my brother’s flight is late or not - even BEFORE he calls us!!!
Thanks to all!
