Ning 2.0 launches: build your own social network
Hmmm, I have a video of Ning going up (Marc Andreessen, founder of Netscape, and investor in Ning, and Gina Bianchini, CEO of Ning, came and visited me last week) but you can read all about the new Ning over on TechMeme. It’s rising up the charts.
I wonder what Marc Canter has to say about this? (His company is going after the same space).
Oh, and ClipMarks will have something fun too (that video will be up at about 5 a.m. today, Pacific Time).
UPDATE: Ning is pretty neat. It basically will let you build something similar to Channel 9. Your own community site with pieces you pick. TechCrunch has the details.
Here’s the video interview with Marc Andreessen and Gina Bianchini (CEO of Ning). We talk about a lot more than just Ning, cause Marc was the founder of Netscape and has learned quite a bit since going through that experience.
Here’s the demo (Gina rocks!!!):

Check out this list of all the social networks that you can rebrand. Marc Canter’s site (who I recently video interviewed) as well as Ning are present.

Why Ning will work and not work at the same time.
As Ning launches today there are some reports out there and it is worth looking at them - including the comments.

Well, I’ve been trying to talk with Marc about PeopleAggregator and widgets for ages. No response. But I can put Snipperoo widgets in Ning within a few seconds of making a site.
Scoreline so far: Ning 1: PeopleAggregator 0

Marc,
Thanks - I do want to contact you and will. But the Marc I’m complaining about above is Marc Canter. Cheers, Ivan

I just got hosed by Ning and I’m pissed off, so read this before you get all excited when signing up: http://www.ericrice.com/blog/?p=390
Grr.

Update, I got a comment from Gina @ Ning here http://www.ericrice.com/blog/?p=390#comment-24411
Hopefully, I can get my account deleted so I can start over.
I appreciate the feedback.

Would be great if you could play these videos at 1.5x speed within this control. I used to do that with Channel 9.

WOW!
And the product looks impressive too. I chose a userid that I wouldn’t want to use for the site name (as per #13).

By the way, these two videos demonstrate three things:
1: I can play this just fine on my Linux box (thank you!) some of the earlier videos I couldn’t.
2: Seems like a lot of video producers are having problems equalizing their sound. Some things way to loud, some things way too soft. Unless it’s just me the audio level on these two are way different. Can’t this be fixed after the content is recorded (post-production or whatever it is called)? I have pretty good speakers here, so I’m not worried about overloading them, more about blasting my aging eardrums. Some sort of “industry standard” sound level would be nice. Is there such a thing?
3: Maybe related to 1 and/or 2: I don’t see any volume or stream controls (if this is a Linux or Firefox limitation I can live with it). I noticed I can sort of click ahead in the stream, but the indicator seems to be indicating how much of the stream has downloaded, not where I am in it. So my clicks are just guesses about how much ahead or back I want to go in the video.

Watching this interview literally brought tears to my eyes thinking about the possibilities Ning can enable.
