Bill Marriott on importance of education

You might have heard about Marriott. The hotel chain. It all happened because a kid went to college and got enough confidence to try something new, Bill Marriott wrote on his blog.

Every day I’m thankful that my dad went to college at a community college in New York (on the GI Bill), later got a PhD from Rutgers, and got moved to Silicon Valley to work at Ampex. Everytime I pass the Ampex sign I thank them cause without that I wouldn’t have been in the middle of the tech industry.

Marriott’s blog is really good, by the way, and I thank James Governor for bringing this post to my attention. The other post that James brought to our attention made a tear come to my eye.

A great corporate blog points the light toward other people. Subscribed!

  1. Bill Marriott is a good man. I know him and his family personally. But I think that the more important point is an attitude of education. If you walk through life with this attitude you will always be learning. Formal classroom education may not cut it for you, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be educated and be an educated and brilliant person as well as be regarded as such by society, etc.

  3. I think even Dennis Howlett was touched – and you know what a cynical old git he is. i really like the marriott blog – and its hotels, funnily enough. they were the first major chain to make broadband as easy as taking a cable out of the closet and plugging into STSN box. but the blog has a really excellent tone. i think shel will like this story too.
