Another Stanford University Startup coming September 2007

by on March 5, 2007

You know it as the birthplace of HP, Yahoo, Google, Sun, and Cisco, among others.

But coming in September 2007 another kind of startup is coming to Stanford University: a new Scoble! Yeah, Maryam and I are expecting a new child.

Why Stanford University? Cause Maryam’s mom has been to the hospitals there several times for various surgeries and we’ve always been impressed with their care and it’s close to work.

We learned last week that she’s been pregnant for three months and are quite excited and nervous. Big changes in lifestyle ahead.

First thing is that I’m not going to travel after Gnomedex for at least six months except for CES.

One thing we learned is we both were really nervous about talking about it here. Why? Cause there’s a great deal of uncertainty. We both know people who’ve had miscarriages and know it’s a fairly common thing. We thought we were going to have to keep this secret for a few months until we hit three months, but then last week Maryam went into the doctor and she said she was 11 weeks along. Maryam wasn’t even moody or sick, so didn’t send out the usual “I’m pregnant” gestures. Anyway, back to the usual programming here.

  • Many congratulations!

As a recently new dad myself, something I’ve learned:

    1. when your wife is pregnant, she is always right — just, don’t bother arguing. Just don’t.

  • Congrats!!! This is such great news--I am so happy for you both--you will love having another child.
  • Can babycasting be far behind? You two would be my choice for parents, if i'd had had a choice. With a built-in savant brother, no less, to teach me everything about Web 2.0. Enjoy serenity while it lasts.

Being so public with your life is a hard thing to do but it does bring you much support and friendship as can be seen by the comments on this post.
  • Jacob Levy
Congrats to Robert and Maryam! Exciting news!

  • Robert - Adding more congrats! Very exciting news.
  • Hurrah for Maryam and you and Patrick and baby!
  • Hey, congratulations!

Wonder how much trouble you'd get into for signing a 2-month-old up for Second Life...
  • Jim Posner
Congratulations! We had our first child 16 months ago and what a wild ride it's been. Nothing like unconditional love to rock your world, as I am sure you know.
  • A very hearty congratulations to Maryam, Patrick and yourself.
Robert your are very right about wives:)
  • Congratulations to both you and your wife!
  • Congrats Robert!
  • Sue
I find it hugely appropriate that you announced this on my birthday. I'm feeling very auntie-ish.
  • Big congrats to all the Scoble clan! Best of luck!
  • Tony: Haven't you learned yet? Wives are always correct whether pregnant or not. The consequences of not understanding that are just harsher during pregnancies. :-)
  • Congratulations to both of you! That's wonderful news!
  • Congratulations to you both!
  • Ujjal: heheh, the answer to that one won't come anytime soon! But it's always fun to watch a person emerge.

Dave: Nah, I don't want to give the kid a name that'd get him taped to a tree in high school! :-)

Tim: tell me about it. Maryam and I just went through Europe, too, and she didn't have many symptoms other than her usual "eat chocolate" urges were gone.
  • Congrats to you all Robert!

    Best wishes from the UK.
  • Mazel tov and congratulations.

If you want an idea for a name, how about Scoble 3.0?

Big win: Not gender-specific, and totally geek-friendly. And it pays proper respect to Brother Patrick. :-)
  • Ujjal Pathak
Rob's first question to Scoble Jr. II - "Who are you?"

    :)
  • McD
"Live is what happens when you're busy"... blogging about your life.

This child is likely to be very well documented...
in video, blog posts and podcasts.

One thing is sure, it will be well loved and have access to some really great toys.
  • First, congrats to Patrick! He gets to be a big brother, and that is a very special thing. You get to teach a sibling how to get things done, what to do and not to do, and how to sneak food into your room when you are hungry but it's close to dinner. I want to warn you Patrick: You brother/sister will destroy you in video games. No matter how good you think you are, by the time they are playing (around 5) they will be better than you are now. Start preparing yourself now.

Second, super congrats to you and Maryam! I'm kinda surprised you found out yesterday that you have been expecting for so long... usual the morning sickness and body pains/changes are a dead give away. My wife and I just had a baby last October, so good luck with it all.

And don't get too set on a hospital. My wife and I had planned to go to a specific place in the DC area, but got stuck in rush hour traffic and ended up having to call 911 to have them take her to the nearest place (Baby and mom were fine, just our baby girl was coming faster than I could get her to a hospital).

Again, good luck! If you are in the DC area and need anything let me know.
  • Mazel Tov!
  • Many congratulations!

As a recently new dad myself, something I've learned:

    1. when your wife is pregnant, she is always right -- just, don't bother arguing. Just don't. ;)

    2. after the baby is born, use both parents to help babysit -- they'll enjoy it, and you'll get much needed sleep.

    Cheers
    tony @ dji
  • Congratulations Maryam and Robert!
  • Congrats to you both!! That's amazing news. I have a feeling your new one will be the most flickrd/twitterd/blogged little one of the decade.
  • Maybe it is a sign:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6421053.stm

"One of Bosnia's three-member presidency has helped a woman in labour by escorting her car to hospital at high speed with his motorcade.

Zeljko Komsic noticed a distressed couple driving fast near the town of Maglaj late on Saturday.

Suad Ibrahimovic said he and his wife, Jasminka, were so grateful that they would name the baby after him."
  • Many Congratulations to you both!

I look forward to meeting the little one on many of it's little adventures with you both!

    Yay!
  • Artificial: hmmm, now THAT would be a PR event! :-)
  • Zoli: we'll need some more VC funding to put this kid back into Stanford in 18 years! :-)
  • Bootstrapped or VC funded? :-)

    Congrat's!
  • Congratulations to the both of you!

Let's hope there are no delays in the shipping :)
  • Congratulations to both of you! The Scoblization of the world is continuing right on course. Try to work 'Pod' into his/her name somehow ;-)

    Mike
  • mazel tov! The more Scobles the merrier.

  • Congratulations!
  • Congratulations to you and Maryam!
  • Congrats to you both!

If the new new Scoble needs someone more her/his age to learn the ropes of WoW from, I'm sure my 4-year-old would oblige.
  • Ian Robins
Congratulations to you and Maryam! It's wonderful news!
  • Josh: Maryam says "no recording equipment!"

    Translation: we'll see. :-)
  • Congrats Robert! I look forward to reading all about mini-Scoble.
  • As a product of Stanford University Hospital, Congratulations!

PS- Will the birth by podcasted?
  • So glad for you guys and thrilled to be here on the day you announced the big news. And Robert, what's this other big honor I hear ... PC Mag's Top 15 Web 2.0 Innovators ... did I get that right? Brag a little!
  • Dave Persing
Congratulations Robert! Best of luck with the new kiddo!
  • Congratulations to you both!

    - Neil.
  • Congratulations!
  • Hey - congrats!
  • Felicitations, Robert, Mariam, and Baby Scoble! Let's just pray that the baby gets Mariam's looks and your infectious laugh! :)
  • congradulations to both of you.
  • Congrats Robert, and to Maryam as well. Not traveling for 6 months with the birth of your child - you sound like Tiger Woods.
  • Congratulations to the two (three) of you!
  • Congrats, Robert. The question is, will you still have time to read all those blogs with a little one around. ;)
  • The most interesting news in this blog since you left Microsoft!
Just kidding, congratulation to the both of you! I do not know when you had time ;-)
  • Saw the news on Twitter; best of luck on the new addition! :)
  • congrats to you both!!!! a young twitter-er in the making :)
  • popwheel: bring your 12-year-old over. My 13-year-old will get him addicted to WoW or something on the Xbox.
  • Congrats!
Having a baby is incredible! My baby just turned 12yrs and I miss the newborn age :-)

Good Luck and try not to be nervous about the pregnancy. I'm sure everything will be smooth sailing!
  • Chris: heheh. I don't get sleep as it is. I'll just trade blogging time for baby time.
  • Congratulations.

Start building up the sleep reserves now. You'll soon be on the night-shift! But its a great gig

    chris@rawstylus.wordpress.com
  • Skrocki: my kids will have to live with a blurry private life. It is a tough issue. On the other hand, any employer who asked such a question would be a good one to avoid.
  • Congrats guys -- the Zug's are overjoyed for you!!

I think the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital oversees part of the maternity ward for Stanford -- so some of the medical software training systems I work on may play a part -- funny how things come together -- much love
  • w00t! Congrats! :-) Before you create scobleizette.com or scobleizerJr.com, you might want to check this out: http://news.com.com/Blogging+your+baby/2009-102...
Kind of made me start wondering if my kid will one day think I violated her privacy by blogging about her. I can envision her now in an interview down the road..."So, I see here according to your mother's blog that as a child you had a Rainman-like obsession with color-sorting your clothes in your closet. How will that affect your work here?"
  • brittonnewmedia: so far Patrick's been a teenager for a few months and he's been a dream. I keep wondering when the other shoe will drop.
  • Colin: heheh. Seagate has a nice ring about it but Maryam said "no!" :-)

We won't know gender for a few more months. Patrick didn't show his gender until a couple of weeks before birth and he was getting pictures taken every few weeks (his mom had gestational diabetes).
  • Congratulations, Robert and Maryam! We wish you and yours all the best. My wife says that the lovable early years, are what sustain you during the teenage years. All in all, we woudn't trade being parents for anything, even considering the teen years.
  • Congrats to you both!!!! Wonderful news!
  • colin
    Wonderous news.

Will you be announcing gender on your blog?

How about "Seagate" for a name? ;)

    Hope all goes well.
  • Kevin Schofield
    Dude! Congratulations!
  • Congratulations from t'other side of the pond.
  • Andrew: there've been a few babies born on Seattle freeways in the past few months. Hopefully that doesn't happen to us!
  • Congratulations. We did something similar with our recent addition in that we choose a hospital a bit farther away but one we thought had better care. Of course, when the time came, well, that was a pretty fun drive...(fun for me at least--the wife was about to kick out the windows).

    Good luck.
  • Congratulations! We are excited and happy for you. I'll always remember the look on Maryam's face when I last saw her. ;-) Blessings to you and your whole family. If there's any way we can help, please let us know.
