Another Stanford University Startup coming September 2007

You know it as the birthplace of HP, Yahoo, Google, Sun, and Cisco, among others.

But coming in September 2007 another kind of startup is coming to Stanford University: a new Scoble! Yeah, Maryam and I are expecting a new child.

Why Stanford University? Cause Maryam’s mom has been to the hospitals there several times for various surgeries and we’ve always been impressed with their care and it’s close to work.

We learned last week that she’s been pregnant for three months and are quite excited and nervous. Big changes in lifestyle ahead.

First thing is that I’m not going to travel after Gnomedex for at least six months except for CES.

One thing we learned is we both were really nervous about talking about it here. Why? Cause there’s a great deal of uncertainty. We both know people who’ve had miscarriages and know it’s a fairly common thing. We thought we were going to have to keep this secret for a few months until we hit three months, but then last week Maryam went into the doctor and she said she was 11 weeks along. Maryam wasn’t even moody or sick, so didn’t send out the usual “I’m pregnant” gestures. Anyway, back to the usual programming here.

Congratulations! We are excited and happy for you. I’ll always remember the look on Maryam’s face when I last saw her. ;-) Blessings to you and your whole family. If there’s any way we can help, please let us know.

  2. Andrew Says:

Congratulations. We did something similar with our recent addition in that we choose a hospital a bit farther away but one we thought had better care. Of course, when the time came, well, that was a pretty fun drive…(fun for me at least–the wife was about to kick out the windows).

    Good luck.

  3. Robert Scoble Says:

Andrew: there’ve been a few babies born on Seattle freeways in the past few months. Hopefully that doesn’t happen to us!

  4. Simon Bisson Says:

Congratulations from t’other side of the pond.

  5. Kevin Schofield Says:

    Dude! Congratulations!

    Wonderous news.

Will you be announcing gender on your blog?

How about “Seagate” for a name? ;)

    Hope all goes well.

  7. hugh macleod Says:

Congrats to you both!!!! Wonderful news!

  8. brittonnewmedia Says:

Congratulations, Robert and Maryam! We wish you and yours all the best. My wife says that the lovable early years, are what sustain you during the teenage years. All in all, we woudn’t trade being parents for anything, even considering the teen years.

  9. Robert Scoble Says:

Colin: heheh. Seagate has a nice ring about it but Maryam said “no!” :-)

We won’t know gender for a few more months. Patrick didn’t show his gender until a couple of weeks before birth and he was getting pictures taken every few weeks (his mom had gestational diabetes).

  10. Robert Scoble Says:

brittonnewmedia: so far Patrick’s been a teenager for a few months and he’s been a dream. I keep wondering when the other shoe will drop.

  11. Bryan Zug Says:

Congrats guys — the Zug’s are overjoyed for you!!

I think the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital oversees part of the maternity ward for Stanford — so some of the medical software training systems I work on may play a part — funny how things come together — much love

  12. Skrocki Says:

w00t! Congrats! :-) Before you create scobleizette.com or scobleizerJr.com, you might want to check this out: http://news.com.com/Blogging+your+baby/2009-1025_3-6164386.html?tag=html.alert
Kind of made me start wondering if my kid will one day think I violated her privacy by blogging about her. I can envision her now in an interview down the road…”So, I see here according to your mother’s blog that as a child you had a Rainman-like obsession with color-sorting your clothes in your closet. How will that affect your work here?”

  13. Robert Scoble Says:

Skrocki: my kids will have to live with a blurry private life. It is a tough issue. On the other hand, any employer who asked such a question would be a good one to avoid.

  14. Chris Hoskin Says:

    Congratulations.

Start building up the sleep reserves now. You’ll soon be on the night-shift! But its a great gig

  15. Robert Scoble Says:

Chris: heheh. I don’t get sleep as it is. I’ll just trade blogging time for baby time.

  16. popwheel Says:

    Congrats!
Having a baby is incredible! My baby just turned 12yrs and I miss the newborn age :-)

Good Luck and try not to be nervous about the pregnancy. I’m sure everything will be smooth sailing!

  17. Robert Scoble Says:

popwheel: bring your 12-year-old over. My 13-year-old will get him addicted to WoW or something on the Xbox.

    Mazel Tov!

  56. Tim Crandley Says:

First, congrats to Patrick! He gets to be a big brother, and that is a very special thing. You get to teach a sibling how to get things done, what to do and not to do, and how to sneak food into your room when you are hungry but it’s close to dinner. I want to warn you Patrick: You brother/sister will destroy you in video games. No matter how good you think you are, by the time they are playing (around 5) they will be better than you are now. Start preparing yourself now.

Second, super congrats to you and Maryam! I’m kinda surprised you found out yesterday that you have been expecting for so long… usual the morning sickness and body pains/changes are a dead give away. My wife and I just had a baby last October, so good luck with it all.

And don’t get too set on a hospital. My wife and I had planned to go to a specific place in the DC area, but got stuck in rush hour traffic and ended up having to call 911 to have them take her to the nearest place (Baby and mom were fine, just our baby girl was coming faster than I could get her to a hospital).

Again, good luck! If you are in the DC area and need anything let me know.

  62. Robert Scoble Says:

Ujjal: heheh, the answer to that one won’t come anytime soon! But it’s always fun to watch a person emerge.

Dave: Nah, I don’t want to give the kid a name that’d get him taped to a tree in high school! :-)

[...] Robert Scoble announced on his blog today that he is going to be a new father in September.  Congrats to Robert but even more to Maryam.  Robert now can enter into my world as a Daddy Blogger.  Yeah he had Patrick already, but there is nothing like blogging the experience.  I of course got my start in blogging as a Daddy blogger, a way of talking about my kids and what it was like to be a father of two young ones.  It was so great, I had two more kids.  My excuse was that I needed more blog fodder.  In the comments on his post, he says that Maryam is nixing any ideas of podcasting or videoblogging the event.  I know this is Maryam’s first time as being a Mom, so she gets the first one for free, but be aware Maryam, I live blogged my third child.  My wife could only roll her eyes and try to explain the blogosphere to the nurse in the birthing room.  I would have explained it but I was too busy posting and checking stats.  [...]
