SXSW’ing through Twitter

I just announced something over on my Twitter account and immediately got a flood of emails. It’s like a huge chat room. I’m adding all my followers so that I can follow them. It might look inane to you, but it’s a very engaged audience and there’s some very influential people there. We’re going to Salt Lick on Monday night, see the Twitter for details.

Speaking of that. I was named to the most important to the Web list over at PC World. That list is obviously suspect as a result, but I’m very honored. But I’m turning over my slot to David Heinemeier Hansson, author of Ruby on Rails. So many startups tell me they are using Rails that he should be on the list, not me.

Another guy? Scott Isaacs. Inventor of DHTML (without which AJAX wouldn’t be very interactive). Another one?  Håkon Wium Lie. Inventor of CSS. Another one? Scott Guthrie, who runs Internet tools for Microsoft. How about Molly Holzschlag, who helps run the Web Standards Project? How about Mitchell Baker, head of the Mozilla Foundation?

Should I go on? I don’t deserve to be on this list. There are a lot more people who are doing a lot more for the Web than I am.

Stop being modest — you must deserve it, you’ve been named :)
    Seriously — congrats Robert.

Well, it’d be nice to see a higher quality list. Any list of who’s important to the Web that doesn’t include these people, among others (I can think of another 20 that are more important to the Web than I am) isn’t very credible. Therefor the honor isn’t earned and is empty. But, thanks, actually the congrats from you means more.

Re list, are you trying to tell others that the are wrong? Accept the compliments, and don’t insult your nominees! Congratulations. :) Congrats is the order of the day for you anyhow.

What I wanted to say, Twitter. I don’t know you, I’ve never met you. I’m just a Deafie in Wales who curses you for not putting subtitles on your videos thus I can’t understand half of what you produce. I’m interested in ideas, and how tech can be used hence I’m on it (and read half the stuff I do).

However, I will say this, Twitter is amazing. People on there, in a weird way I feel connected to, I’m engaging in some sort of conversation or perhaps eavesdropping.

In the meantime, shame I can’t persuade my contacts to join (yet).

Alison: I’m still on “K” so will get to you soon. Email me if I forget you.

Sorry about the subtitles. I gotta get that figured out and budgeted for.

Robert, Congratulations; and, be gracious. You have had disagreements before with people, I’m sure; but, it appears to many to be just a little insensitive when the recipient of an award speaks one or two decibels too loudly when pointing out the obvious flaws in the process which landed the award at his feet. To those concerned, if the award was not meant for you, then you would have done without it— which could be the case from here on out if you don’t just say a sheepish “thanks” and back slowly away from the keyboard… You’re just better than you thought, that’s all… Enjoy it…

James: I am honored. I just don’t think I’m as important as, say, the head of Mozilla Foundation that makes Firefox.

Heck, that just reminded me that the folks who do IE aren’t on there either and that’s used by 50% to 70% of the Web.

I’m as egotistical as the next guy, but I don’t like getting honored when I don’t yet deserve it.

The first time I saw you was on Channel9 since then I’ve been reading and watching your work, keep the good work and always be original

    Congrats!!

And if you think these other people deserve to be on the list you should interview them, like Scott Guthrie, or maybe you already did.

Robert, before you head out to the Salt Lick, please stop by Brush Square Park across from the convention center and join me and my friends for a Nuclear Taco, a beer and an ice cream. The party starts at 6pm on Monday, and you can’t miss it as you walk out the north entrance of the convention center.

Never saw Twitter before. Looks interesting, but I’m trying to work out what the business case for such a service is. I just blogged all about various Web 2.0 tools which I’ve found useful for driving traffic (http://jetteroheller.wordpress.com/2007/02/28/how-do-you-use-web-20-tools-to-drive-traffic-to-your-site/), but this looks to be more like something one uses to chill and chat. Am I missing something?

Robert: I responded to your Twitter within 3 minutes of it hitting Twitter. But no response. Does that mean no room left?

Robert, in this instance it doesn’t matter that you think you don’t deserve the honor. It’s about the value that PC World has attached to your contribution. Don’t devalue it.
