Wow, Rafat Ali is reporting that InfoWorld is closing and that the staff didn’t even know before they learned that online. The new tech trade press? My link blog + TechMeme + Digg + Google Reader.

InfoWorld is making the adjustment that many in traditional journalism are afraid to make. As you know, O’Reilly is also saying the SF Chronicle is in trouble, and will see layoffs. The world of media and PR is changing. Those who don’t change with it are going to be left behind.
… On the flip side, your link blog (which I read) is not yet on par with TechMeme and Digg. That will take a while, sir, and it cannot be announced as a leader by you, but by others. Let the others hype it, and you can agree. :-)

Nah, not at all, New Media has zero to do with this. The tech twizzlehead meme market is not the CIO ERP market. You misread the market. Tech has become more of a commodity, and less need for all the analysis and the “case studies”…
Now the Chronicle and SJMN, more complex than blaming it on Digg. Makes for a nice sound bite, but many factors and overall economic underpinnings here.

This is not unlike every challenge that most tech magazines, and magazines in general, face in the current shift to online, socialized media.

They need to close InfoWorld.com as well. It’s sucked since ~1999.

@2 as usual, Chris has the proper perspective and insight.
To think that Infowold readers have migrated to blogs for the type of news, reviews and analysis that they got from Infoworld is simply a small-minded perspective.

Robert, you’re going to need an SUV to hold your ego soon. Maybe in the “omgSCOBLE” bubble you live in, your link blog has any validity, but in the sysadmin/IT world? You don’t exist. Oh, I’m sure you think you do, but really, you don’t. HD? Xbox? Esoteric shit out of MSR, IBM/Almaden and the rest? Who makes the best streaming home video?
Who.Cares.
You’re so beyond clueless if you think your link blog and techmeme are a huge part of most people’s day. Especially your link blog.
As far as Digg goes, well, Digg is just Slashdot, only without the quality of content and incisive commentary.
Google reader? Meh. Everything is doing RSS now, the value of any dedicated news reader program is minor unless you happen to like the UI.
I’m actually impressed that you think you’re some kind of leader in the Tech Press world. Well, more at the grandiose size of your delusions of grandeur, and more de- than im-, but i’m definitely pressed.

I would say Robert’s classification for his link blog is somewhat aspirational, but it’s a good aspiration, because his link blog is excellent. Exceptional in many ways. Alot of people would be wise to scan it. I’m one of them.

If you think that “Tech Industry” == “blogging and nothing more” then yes, Robert’s link blog is indeed, all that.
However, if your view of the tech industry is a bit broader and deeper? Then, not so much.

But also without the pretension, the “know-it-all”ness, the “I’m God’s gift to programming” garbage. Digg has less substance than slashdot but is a lot more fun. :p
But Scoble is smoking funny if he thinks that Digg is a place to get real news about anything.
