’60 Minutes’ brings Google traffic

I saw several hundred people getting to my blog by Googling “RedFin” tonight. This is very strange and is a huge anomaly in my traffic patterns. WordPress.com reports to blog owners where traffic is coming from. I wondered why everyone was searching for “RedFin” and then I found the RedFin blog and saw that they were on the famous American TV show 60 Minutes last night. Why did Google bring the traffic here? The seventh result on Google is my video I did with RedFin’s CEO back in March.

    It’s kind of interesting actually. Techcrunch has an older post on the subject, but had a new one yesterday talking about the event before it aired. Google has a result for the old Techcrunch news, not yesteday’s more recent entry. Are those the best two blog entries on the subject or just the ones with the most links? I don’t know but they are the only two blogs in the top ten.

    Glenn seems like a very gifted communicator. In the tech world I’ve noticed it’s a challenge not getting into the rugged tech details.

    Your post points out an interesting relationship between tv and blog’s. Coming directly to your blog, that show might have seemed “old”, but to the tv viewers visiting via google, your blog might look like the “newest” information online via video.

    the redfin google results reinforce the theme of David Weinberger’s great new book Everything is Miscellaneous. Your original Redfin post was “consigned” to the cyberworld of miscellany, but retrievable when the personal google search was initiated by someone somewhere using the search term Redfin – and voila! linking back to you.

    BTW the 60 minutes piece on RedFin and its battle with the National RealEstate Association demonstrating its lobbying power at both the state and Federal legislative level to choke the oxygen out of RedFin.

Google sees your article as one of the most popular on RedFin TechCrunch’s new article ranked below its old one because the old one had so many more inbound links and therefore looks to have more relavance to RedFin.
