Bill and Steve’s wild adventure

Great summary by engadget. I don’t agree with everyone calling this “historic” however.

The engadget piece concludes with:
“They’re wrapping up… shall we recap? Steve, calculating, articulate, very guarded, playing his hand very close to the chest. Bill, very friendly, very open, surprisingly accessible. These two guys are one in a million, and it’s totally clear they’ve never respected anyone quite like they respect each other.”

I’ve met both men briefly, and came away with the same impression.

It’s official.. Microsoft has no taste.

“Is there anything that one envies about the other, Gates cited Jobs’ “intuitive taste, both for people and products.”

Steve was talking about the number downloaded copies of iTunes and how they are mostly for Windows users. His response?

“It’s like giving a glass of ice water to somebody in hell.”

Always remember that Ryan likes to bash Apple any chance he gets. Maybe not so much here, but in general. Take all things Ryan Block with large amounts of salt.

Oh, see that Engadget are hiring? No experience necessary. Just the ability to hit that Post button and don’t bother with fact-checking. Don’t bother about chasing a response from the people/company you’re writing about. Hit Post baby! This ain’t no journalism ya know!

I don’t know about Ryan bashing Apple, but I do know that engadget constantly bashes Microsoft. It’s gotten so it’s a running joke on engadgets comments section.

Reading through the engadget comments for this particular story, there was one insightful comment:
“Ya know Jobs and Apple trash talks about Gates and Windows all the time. If he just all sweetness and nice now first hand with Gates it tells me he is simply the grandstanding phony I have suspected.”

There’s much truth in that statement. While Gates rarely says anything negative about Apple (at least not publicly), Jobs does indeed publicly trash Microsoft every chance he gets (even dedicating a full 10-minute segment of a WWDC to trashing them). His being all lovey-dovey when he appears jointly with Gates shows him to be little more than a politician playing to the makeup of his audience on any particular day. At WWDC he throws his worshippers the red meat, but here he does the opposite.

Kenny, that is true. Jobs throwing jabs at MS and not much the other way. Although, it’s sometimes common for the “little guy” to do so. In this case Apple’s 3% market share to MS’s 95%. It would probably be the reverse if Gates was Jobs, and Jobs was Gates.

Of course, lets not make Gates to be some sort of saint. Lets not forget the history of his business dealings in the past. The highway is lined with the corpses of companies Gates has destroyed through less than ethical means.

Are you guys serious? Bill Gates does not need to publicly trash Apple because he has Steve Ballmer to do it for him.

Last ditch effort to revive the old magic that was. Not gonna work. I see two software lords scared of the new and faster slashdotting, diggnating, google mapping crop of tech entrepreneurs who have already taught them a lesson or two about how businesses are going to work in the 21st century.

Again, I just bought this brand new 24 inch mac for work and it’s sitting at the front desk right now. This is a pic of the night I bought it. It’s the first Mac I’ve ever gotten.
I wasn’t disappointed except for the 1 mouse button instead of the 2. Mac is really nice. The package system is a lot like RPM on Linux or the Solaris package system. Very nice indeed.

I can’t imagine Steve Jobs wrote a line of code or designed the machine though. I wonder why it is that Mac fans focus on him exclusively and ignore the people that actually work on the computers moreso than Microsoft or Linux, especially Linux. Nobody would mistake the entire system for Linus Torvalds and his package for instance.

I’m even guilty of this. I feel as if Steve Jobs personally packaged my Mac and shipped it. I guess it’s from years of marketing and mac fanaticism beat into me.

My favorite part was the “Bill.. Bill… Let me tell the story!”

I dunno about that. Mac OSX is nice, especially on the 24 inch screen. I would snap a pic, but do not have my digital camera here at work in the office.

Beryl totally kicks OSX’s butt hands down.
Mac is really nice, but it will never be as cutting, no bleeding edge as Linux. At least it has Apache and bash by default, and the entropy.ch site. Even with MSDN pro and dev licenses to all the software, I’d rather be sawed in half than have to use IIS.(and impaled)

Oh please, is everything exactly the same in your world. Do you say the EXACT same things in the workplace as you do when you’re goofing with friends? Do you not alter your behavior for the situation? When your boss does something to piss you off, do you react the same way with no variation whatsoever as you do when you’re driving and someone cuts you off?

Somehow, I doubt that, yet you require that Steve Jobs behave exactly the same in every situation?

If you can’t exceed the standard, stop insisting others meet it.

Also super disappointed with the default Apache 1.3. That’s very debianish. All the GNU packages are super outdated even on the newest OSX, just like sarge. That means that if you wrote an apache module in the past 3 years it won’t work.

The new Mac in the office finally let me pull the pics off my cell phone from a couple months ago. I just got them off like 5 minutes ago. Mac does blue tooth pretty well. My Dongle was broken so these have been on my phone for months now.

At any rate. I would rather hang out with those guys before Turtle Neck and Butterfly boy any day.

Back to work I go.

I should add, RMS does not use a GUI. He is completely old school. I was sitting behind him the whole time. He also seems to love EMACS. Probably because he wrote it.

Gates would never let ordinary people sit next to him. He’s royalty after all.

That is true, Jobs probably didn’t write a single line of code. That probably should probably be a “sure thing”. But anyway, Job is what drives Apple. His persona, talent for knowing what’s aesthetically pleasing to the eye and his driving force pushes the company forward. He’s their leader and not just the CEO. CEO’s aren’t always leaders. Jobs leads his troops and a lot of them admire him and are willing to follow his vision. Sounding like a cult to you? Maybe. But the troops aren’t putting on Nike sneakers and killing themselves for the Almighty One.

So no, he didn’t write the code. But he had a hand in a lot of what you are getting when you buy an Apple product.

I’m just against the whole snobby turtleneck thing.
As for Bill Gates he sailed that ship when it was 2 years old. You can’t get any more snobby than being knighted by the British royal family.

The machine is great, but I don’t think I’ll ever be a Mac nut. People are just too snooty for me to sign on to the click. When I see the I’m a mac, I’m a PC commercial, I wish Tux the penguin would jump in and kill them both with a machete.

Linus was probably too busy managing all the code contributions he gets. RMS wasn’t invited because he doesn’t bathe.

I found the whole thing entertaining,as for Jobs bashing Gates,yeah Jobs seems to lack class sometimes and comes across as having a case of serious sour grapes.
