Exciting speech to text cell phone demo

I can’t wait until our cell phones can do this.

Is this a smoke and mirrors demo? Or something that’ll get delivered this year? I met these two guys at the Charles River Ventures partner meeting. They’ve been funded to build this system.

This is the first public demo of the system they call Mobeus (they say the name will change by the time they ship).

It’s good to see that there’s lots of innovation left in the cell phone space. What do you think? Do you want your cell phone to do this?

    Hey Scoble,

    Great sneak peak to the future. Very cool! I always look forward to these kind of reviews in your blog. This would be ideal for the iPhone with it's unusual "keyboard" interface. But without Java, I guess iPhone and Cingular is not the US carrier getting this app this summer? This also would be a killer app for taking notes as one is driving or unable to write something down (for execs, to sales roadwarriors, to busy soccer-moms). If it's simple to use, I would rather use this app than my keyboard of my Treo for emails, web, texts, and notes.

    Thanks a lot for the preview. I actually use something very cool already for taking notes when I'm driving to work and for emailing my assistant without typing. Its called Jott. Its carrier independent so doesn't require the people I'm messaging with to have my carrier (Verizon). I use it all the time but let me know what you think!
  • I sold a company to Vodafone last March that did exactly this, for email.
  • Mr. Scoble - When I was Director of Thrifty.com we were implementing a WAP version of our car rental interface for mobile phones. The problem we had was... ok, the person has a PHONE in their hand... which interface would YOU rather use? A quick 800# call? Or, a peck and type process. Yeah, that's what I thought.

    Still, InfoWorld parked us in the top 100 mobile innovators of 2001. It's fun being early to the dance like Mobeus is. We may get to take all the arrows and blaze all the early trails. But, the early mover advantage allows us to make a lot of mistakes EARLY, adapt, iterate and learn all those lessons.

    This stuff is COOL! and I hope they stay in touch with you.

    OMG I cannot tell you how much I need this app. I've been searching the web for hours trying to find a speech-to-text app for my new Treo. I'm often on the move for work - I do a lot of field investigations in odd locations - and taking pen & paper notes is very hard. Not only because the locations aren't conducive to it (dust, drizzle, etc) but also because it hurts my hands, and then I have to go back and type up the notes!

    So if I could speak into my phone and have it recorded to text, then download or sync that with my computer... Talk about a dream come true!

    Hi, I am so excited to see this technology is really comming. I had this idea ( wouldn't it be wonderful if our cell phones could actually text by speaking into them). You see, about a month ago an 18 year old girl in South Dakota lost her life because she was texting while driving. I know texting while driving is illegal in many states, however our young people today are still going to text and drive. This technology will save many lives. Many loses, as well as provide a service for those who are physically unable to use a cell phone. I did come up with a name for this phone, I am sure you already have a name selected, but this is what I would have called it....Text Tones. The possibilites are limitless, God bless you for your efforts. Linda Taylor, Wichita Kansas.
  • yes you have a phone in your hand, but if its a person you are communicating with nothing beats a few lines of text and one two messages top to take care of that person vs. calling them and getting stuck in some long call.

    I have a Samsung SCH-A970 that does speech-to-text (S2T). In a quite room it gets almost all words right but I can't talk quite as fast as in the video. It came out about 2-3 years ago. I haven't upgraded yet because I don't want to loose S2T (or the 2m-pix camera). This make it look like I might get a new phone soon.

    This app would be a dream come true to have, i've been waiting for something like this for a while now.

    samsung sgh flip phone years ago did speech to text. Yanks don't get it and say things like "just call the person for 2cents ". They don't realise in some countries calling is way more expensive than a text message/email!!
    It would be good if the software also translated it into the more economical phonic language of text speech as well...like "hi, how r u?"
    that would be cool.
