Eric Schmidt on YouTube showing off his iPhone

by on June 16, 2007

Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, spoke to the World Economic Forum that was meeting at Google yesterday. He took on a number of issues. Viacom lawsuit. Cookie lifetimes. Personalization and privacy. Good wrapup of all the latest issues hitting Google lately.

At about 24:30 he briefly pulls out his iPhone.

A potential partnership in the making ???????

Comic Strip Blogger 06.16.07 at 1:45 am

This is so unfair that some people – like above video of length 32 minutes – can publish videos longer than 10 minutes on YouTube but all others, myself included, are allowed only 10 minutes! This sucks and proves that “do no evil” of Google is a LIE!

Robert Scoble 06.16.07 at 1:50 am

Comic: you just need to get a “directors” license on YouTube. And, you gotta get SOMETHING when you spend $1.65 billion on buying a company. :-)

Comic Strip Blogger 06.16.07 at 5:04 am

Robert: nowadays directors or guru’s license on YouTube is not enough – I reckon that 10 minutes is reserved for certain companies + for people who had directors account before general 10 minutes limit was introduced:

We’re no longer offering the option to upload videos longer than 10 minutes, regardless of your account type. If you see a video on YouTube that’s longer than 10 minutes, it’s probably owned by one of our content partners. There are also some users who can upload longer videos because they were given this permission before the feature was removed.

Read more here.

For those who don’t want to wait for the video to load… and just want to see Eric Schmidt with the iPhone… here it is.

Eric in this video says Google fixes a problem when they become aware of it. That is untrue based on my personal experience.

I handed him my card at SES San Jose last August and told him of problems with Google’s dysfunctional recruiting process for a role even though I had numerous internal referrals from people stating that I’d make a great Google employee. He seemed completely unaware of how severe this problem is and how it damages Google’s brand.

He stated that someone would get back to me and asked me to also give my card to his publicist – Eric told me that one of them would get back to me in a week or so. I’m still waiting to hear from them.

Considering they are still using temporary Resume Screeners who know nothing about search or understanding relevant competencies or educational backgrounds – I’d say they not only didn’t contact me, but also forgot all about it.

P.S. The interviewer refers to part of this video as “being on the record”. I recall this language creating a stir in another Google incident recently?

I am still waiting for my iPhone

Shawn Christopher 06.16.07 at 12:06 pm

So wait a second…so Eric Schmidt is a conference to talk about solving the worlds problems with money, and he pulls out a $500 phone….and no one sees a problem with this?

Brendan 06.16.07 at 7:04 pm

Oh it’s sooo thin, oww iPhone, iPhone, iPhone!!!

Webomatica 06.16.07 at 10:12 pm

So does this mean Al Gore has one too… in addition to those three cinema displays? Sure beats running for president – getting cool Apple gear…

Jon Bell 06.17.07 at 11:36 am

“So wait a second…so Eric Schmidt is a conference to talk about solving the worlds problems with money, and he pulls out a $500 phone….and no one sees a problem with this?”

No. No problem.

So then Bill Gates isn’t allowed to address poverty since he’s using a multi-billion dollar company to achieve his aims? Rich people aren’t allowed to use expensive technology to help the world’s poor?

I don’t understand.

yoshi 06.17.07 at 12:52 pm

“So wait a second…so Eric Schmidt is a conference to talk about solving the worlds problems with money, and he pulls out a $500 phone….and no one sees a problem with this?”

The only problem I see is a snarky comment by you that suggest he shouldn’t be able to use the tools he feels necessary to accomplish his goals. You want him to show up at the conference on a horse dressed in a burlap sack? Give us all a break dude.

Interesting video

Misguided User 06.17.07 at 1:22 pm

More than that, Comic Strip Blogger! WAY MORE! Why in the hell I had to listened the first 5min most boring ever introduction from i-dont-even-know-who???? Oh my gosh! Why do you people have the privilege of uploading a 30min video if you’re going to make that?????

SHAME!

I’m going to buy my yahoo! papers back.

Harry 06.17.07 at 1:42 pm

“So wait a second…so Eric Schmidt is a conference to talk about solving the worlds problems with money, and he pulls out a $500 phone….and no one sees a problem with this?””

What a dumb comment, especially considering he probably got the phone for free.

Maxwolf 06.17.07 at 2:37 pm

Jon Bell: It’s called people being haters. They want an iPhone and they don’t have one…but Eric does…but Eric is Rich…and they are not…

They hater complex continues. If Google was a small company this would be considered cool that he would get an iPhone from a big company like Apply.

Now on the other hand now that Google is international and so big it’s scary the fact he has an iPhone makes people think he is apart of some special group.

Or maybe I am insane?

SteveP 06.17.07 at 4:29 pm

Poverty is a relative condition.
So the only sure way to eliminate it is for ALL wealth to be eliminated. (Even a slight amount more than your neighbor would make you, relatively, “wealthy”.)

So I call on all of you “relatively” wealthy as well as truly wealthy people to go out and destroy all your wealth. $$, homes, cars etc. You can’t give it away as that would just cause someone else to be – relatively – wealthy, not eliminate “poverty”.
I call on you.
Do it now!
Go on, I’m waiting!

You go first! :)
(or STFU)

Chris 06.17.07 at 6:22 pm

To the guy who was complaining about how the video was more than 10 minutes, all you need to do is become a director on youtube. I’m sure that you have seen the little gray bar at the top that says director. It’s not the google has special rights.

Tomi Itkonen 06.18.07 at 12:04 am

@10. A percentage of that 500$ goes to the factory worker in China, and he/she buys a meal with it.

One empty stomach less – one of the world’s problems solved.

Sofia 06.18.07 at 3:23 am

Am i the only person who does not get the hype with the iphone? whats the biggie, in a couple of months someone will release something better. Also, this is crap technology, wait a couple of years then buy stuff. I guess thats what they said a couple of years ago…but anyways….

khalil hamda 06.18.07 at 11:13 am

i Love the iPhone

apple is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

getpaidforsurveys 06.18.07 at 2:56 pm

@ Sanity: I feel that the I-phone hype is a great campaign to confuse and stress out competitors..behind the scenes they might work on secret really breakthru technologies. I remember being surveyed about the I-phone in Q 3 or Q 4 last year.Back then it really sounded like a killer toy. Gotta admit I´d buy one though(maybe for the good looks only ;-) ..luv big displays in a way.. ).
Cheers

iPhones! Shiny. I don’t really have much to add to the conversation other than that.

Why do we care what some wealthy guy has bought recently? Chances are he didn’t even buy it and it was given to him because he is a smarmy rich guy. So who cares? Why waste time hating this guy for an iphone? So what if you don’t have one? Who CARES? Why do you want an iPhone anyway? Will it buy you groceries or pay your overdue MMORPG accounts? (Nitpickers, that was a joke I KNOW those accounts will stop when you dont pay)… Anyways most of these cmments on here are so pathetic. WAAAAH. He gets more than 10 minutes. Open your eyes to reality folks. The goodle admin already explained that nobody gets that anymore…. they were “grandfathered” in and so those that were NOT given the limitation ORIGINALLY can STILL post over 10 minutes. You’d want that too if you were an original account holder. But you aren’t so quit WHINING about it!

Agent Daba 06.18.07 at 10:57 pm

i found that the iphone actually appears around 08:00 not 24:30!

Victor Cajiao 06.25.07 at 1:50 pm

Since you asked on Twitter for comments here is mine. Nice Robert, hopefully we can all show off soon.

Here is an iPhone spoof I did over at my blog. No Eric Schmidt but maybe more of a novice iPhone user.

Этот Новый год мы всей семьей (я, жена, две дочки 6 и 8 лет, тёща) будем отмечать дома. Развлекать девчонок, конечно же, придется мне.

Посоветуйте какие-нибудь игры или конкурсы для такой компании!
