Funny N95 vs. iPhone video

This video is hillarious!

I’m still getting an iPhone, though, for Maryam. I’ll probably keep my N95. We’ll see on Saturday, though, after I get a chance to put the iPhone through its paces.

  1. Wow, that was painfully bad. I’m not sure what the craze is with ripping off the Apple ads but people really need to learn that having two guys take on the personas of products is only the very basic element of the Apple ads. The timing and wit of the ads is what makes them great and that’s what makes people think Macs are cool, not the actual comparisons of Mac vs PC. This ad unfortunately gets it all wrong – I’m sure it’s really great to have a good camera in your phone and I’m sure the N95′s camera is better, but the iPhone is cool and this ad just proves that the N95 is for serious geeks with no life.

It’s an emotional reaction and it’s sad that humans are like that but features are not going to matter with advertising like that (hopefully Nokia’s real advertising is a heck of a lot better).

  3. heh. I didn’t say perception matched reality. :) It will be interesting to see if the iPhone’s interface is enough to justify all the other limitations – like the iPod, there are competitors with more features or that do things better etc, but the interface is just so good and the marketing makes it so cool that it doesn’t matter.

The N95′s phone simply won’t be enough to beat the iPhone UI, but there may be other features that make it worthwhile and of course we’re yet to see if the iPhone UI really lives up to expectations. The biggest weak-point of the iPhone is most likely the AT&T contract you have to take with it. Once it’s proven though I’m sure Apple will be keen to do deals with other networks.

  5. Dario: I don’t know which is the better phone yet. I haven’t had my hands on an iPhone yet. I’ll tell you what I think between the two phones this weekend.

  7. @2 – The N95 is for serious geeks that HAVE A LIFE.

Get it right mate… You said that the iPhone is cool. So you want to be cool? People who actually want to be cool, usually aren’t cool at all.

But seriously, I hope you enjoy your new fashion accessory. I’m sure you’ll finally be turning heads for the first time in your life.

  9. heh. I have no intention of buying an iPhone -not to mention the fact that being in Australia I couldn’t anyway. Just because I don’t find two lousy actors reciting a boring, pointless script funny doesn’t mean I’m going to rush out and buy a new iPhone.

All these fancy features on phones these days require a decent data plan and in Australia that’s exceptionally expensive. I’m far better off using my phone as a phone and my laptop with wifi (when it can be found) for internet access and all the cool stuff people are trying to do on their phones these days.

Oh and if you knew me – you really wouldn’t be expecting me to buy anything as a fashion accessory.

  11. Robert – Thanks for embedding our vid! I know it’s lame, it’s not a serious attempt at anything. We were just joking around about how it might be funny, and spent an evening putting videos together.

Obviously we weren’t super concerned about production quality. It’s just for a laugh. However, that’s the 2nd of 6, one for each day leading up till the iPhone. There’s a new one released every day at 6pm.

    -Ricky of Symbian-Guru.com

Personally, I like the iPhone. It’s really done a number on the mobile industry already, and whether it flops or not doesn’t matter, it’s already caused a revolution.

  14. Nice parody. Re: comments. I seldom comment because so many sites want an “account” setup to post comments, and I can’t be bothered to remember so many passwords, since I prefer strong passwords.

  17. Why bother embarrassing yourself for a whole week, Ricky Cadden? To make the same boner over and over again — mistakingly believing that the iPhone competitors can best it by pointing out a better feature or more features — just emphasizes that you don’t understand the issue at all. Your video is the most pathetic thing I’ve seen online since the elephantine fellow got the Zune tattoos.

  20. @Podesta,

So you don’t like it. That’s cool. There’s no need to be a jerk and get personal with the guy though.

In the context of a couple of guys joking around and posting it on YouTube, I thought the video was okay.

Personally, I’m not an Apple die-hard like many seem to be (in general). It will be interesting to see the reaction of the mobile market in the following 12-24 months, but I’m not convinced it’s a “killer” piece of hardware.

The N95 seems pretty good, though it appears to have it’s own teething problems (battery hassles etc), and limited infrastructure support in some areas.

At the end of the day though everyone’s a winner – new toys ;)

  23. I was hoping they’d take even more swipes in the video. There are other feature wars there to be had.

Risto from Nokia came to PodCamp Europe, and he had me drooling for an N95.

Am I right that I can’t swap out the SIM on the iPhone? Doesn’t that limit the customer base right there?

(BTW, I’m writing this on a macbook, have an ipod, an apple tv, a mac mini and have been with macs since 1984, so no, I’m not a hater, macfanboys).

  26. There’s something seriously wrong with anyone who think’s Little Ricky’s video is funny because it isn’t. Maybe the anhedonic are the N95′s target audience.

Meanwhile, the rate plans are out for the phone people REALLY want and they are quite reasonable.

  29. I tried to buy an unlocked Nokia 95 in Bangkok, but they wanted $800 and up for it and I was afraid to spend that kind of money and find out I couldn’t have tMobile support it here. Who is your carrier?

  32. Wow, Mr. Podesta. I’m glad to see you have zero sense of humor. For the record, I don’t think the Nokia N95 (or any other mobile phone, for that matter) competes with the iPhone. The iPhone isn’t targeted to everyone, it’s clearly marketed towards a niche market. And by only expecting to sell 1 million, I’d say Apple acknowledges that, as well.

The idea behind the videos is to show that the marketing hype isn’t all that true. And if you don’t like it, don’t watch it. I don’t care, personally. If you’re so much of an Apple fanboy that you can’t take a laugh now and again, well then that sucks for you.

Sure there’s Nokia fanboys out there, but we’re also not afraid to point out and acknowledge the devices’ shortcomings. Neither should you be.

For those that CAN laugh at a couple guys making asses out of themselves on the Internet, there’s 4 more.

  35. @20, there is a link to CNN and Jupiter. Even these organizations can’t get the facts right. There are six iPhone plans on Apple’s webpage not 3.

The most expensive one is $219.99 not $99.99.

And they are pretty much the same plan as ATT regularly offers (with free 200 text SMS and Visual Voice mail). About a $5 value. ATT typically gives 200 Text and Media SMS at $5 per month.

  38. By the time the iPhone comes out in UK & Europe Nokia I am sure will have made advances past the N95. The 95 is already starting to become a cheap contract option in the UK.

The numbers of photos on flickr for the 95 had a serious peak but seems to be dropping off – http://www.flickr.com/cameras/nokia/n95/ I wonder if this is due to people using it once then getting frustrated?

  41. Little Ricky, there’s no need to be unpleasant. I was just trying to save you from continuing to humiliate yourself. Two less than savory looking guys claiming that pictures they never even show are great wouldn’t cut it for any product. At the very least show something the N95 does instead of just making a claim. You are pretty naive to think that what you’ve done resembles the Get a Mac ads.

Nick, there is also a interview with the CEO at ARM dings the N95 at CNET:

It’s the industrial design and the user interface design, which is different. This (gestures at the N95) is constrained by the user interface that you get with the Symbian operating system. And Nokia has a legacy of industrial design. You wouldn’t actually need the Nokia (logo) on there to know that it was a Nokia phone. That’s a good thing, but it’s also slightly a constraining thing. Likewise, you probably don’t need to know that it comes from Apple when you see the iPhone.

Quite a lot of the user interfaces you find are actually quite clunky. They’re written by engineers for engineers rather than by engineers for consumers.
The different thing about Apple is the combination of the industrial design and the user interface. It creates a desirable product, and from what I’ve seen in the demonstrations of the user interface, a very usable product as well.

  43. Why do you keep comparing the N95 to the iPhone? Two totally, completely different markets. The N95 is a great mobile camera that takes calls and does the web OK (maybe). The iPhone is… well, we all know what it is, but from a camera perspective it’s no great shakes. How do you figure they are comparable.

Honestly, if someone was not interested in, or cared about, the N95′s excellent camera, would you otherwise recommend it? What would they be getting for their $750?

The iPhone may or may not succeed at being a “three-trick pony”, but the N95 is clearly a “one-trick pony”.

  46. Shhhh, Tom. Little Ricky goes out of the way not to mention that the N95 is more expensive than the iPhone at his Apple bashing blog. He keeps citing the N91′s price instead, but then resorting to the N95 when he is ‘comparing.’ Now, you’ve gone and let the cat out of the bag.

  49. This is getting pretty damn funny. I don’t recall ever “Apple bashing” on my blog. I do, however, recall complementing them on a great marketing job, and telling Nokia that they should be doing similar in the marketing department. I’m so glad you’re able to read, Mr. Podesta.

I also don’t recall saying that the iPhone sucks, or is inferior to the N95, or any other phone, for that matter. I do, however, recall pointing out areas in which the iPhone does not particularly shine. You can’t really argue that it does, in fact, support MMS (because it doesn’t) nor can you really seriously argue that a 2MP cam is going to come anywhere near comparing to a 5MP cam, autofocus or not. And in regards to today’s video, you also can’t seriously attempt to state that the iPhone is the first phone to bring “the full internet” to mobiles.

Again, if you can’t handle someone pointing out areas in which a specific device is limited, well then, I’m sorry. And if you can’t laugh about it, as well, then that’s a personal issue that you’re just going to have to work through.

  51. Ricky, just another internet troll don’t worry about it. The majority of people who watched our video found it hilarious!

To everyone else: 3 are released and 3 are coming out, we hope you enjoy them all!

  54. Ricky, Ricky, Ricky, if people are laughing its because the video features two guys with funny shaped heads who don’t know what they are talking about. They are laughing AT you, not WITH you.

Perhaps you can at least grasp the key point David made. The iPhone does not claim to BE a camera. It claims to be a phone, an iPod and a Internet access device. The camera is a feature, not the raison d’etre as you think. (I know some of this language will challenge you, but with help from the Zune tattoo guy you may figure it out.)

Nor is your claim about cameras even accurate. It is possible that a lower megapixel camera can take comparable pictures to a higher megapixel camera.

I normally just let silly people make fools of themselves without remark. But, when blatant misrepresentation is occurring (that means, lying) I do feel a duty to speak up.

Not completely true. Rogers already has HSDPA 3G service in Toronto’s “Golden Horseshoe” region, with further expansion in other centers in late 2007/2008.

  58. Funny. But the iPhone is no competition for N95. Touch Screen-Cool but GPS-Auto Focus 5MP camera-S60(Open to knew ideas)…Much more cooler.
