$50 is alot of internet money.

I have no idea how to make that app, but i do know that you can go to facebook on the iphone.

Why bother?

Just use Facebook Mobile and send a text to Facebook (32665) with the name of a person in your network.

Get the boys from Plaxo to do it. I'm sure it's in their plans anyway.

Second thought:

What about an app that makes a vCard for all your "social network" contacts and adds the appropriate information, combining where appropriate, and keeps a set of their most recent headshot picture of them?

Why stop with Facebook?

Unless Facebook enables the phone tag, you still can't dial it on the iPhone from the web because of no copy/paste function.

Most apps that have been developed like this have been smacked down because to do so violates the Facebook terms of use. The most recent one I know of was

Here's a bit of a workaround if you've got a Mac.

Download FacebookSync.app (http://www.fsbsoftware.com/)

This puts all your Friends in Address Book - with any info that might be made available on Facebook (picture, phone, address, etc). And Address Book will sync to your iPhone.

If you run the app a second time, it recognizes already-stored contacts and will update information if it's changed or just skip 'em.

Facebook used to provide a vCard for your contacts but they disabled it (for privacy concerns, ostensibly). Too bad.

UPDATE: As I write this, I noticed that the app is no longer available because Facebook contacted the dev to say it violates Terms of Use.

I think we need to put some pressure on Facebook to open this up a bit more. They're great about pulling stuff in at the moment, but need to give a bit back out to the world, maybe. Share alike.

So, I found a copy of facebooksync. I sent it to robert. it's not fully working for me. not sure if fb blocked it/ my mbpro has been acting up. this would be a great app. i think facebook should do it as an official app.

This illustrates a problem with Facebook: Everything that goes into Facebook stays there. The new Facebbok apps are great, but they really should open up more of the stuff.

One example: In Flickr there's also Flickr Mail, Flickr's own "in-house" mail system. I can set up alerts that tell me when I get one (like in Facebook). But I get the actual mail: I see the contents of the mail. I don't need to log on to Yahoo/Flickr to actually read the mail.

It's just stupid that there's no way for me to get the names/e-mails of my friends out of Facebook in an easy way.

Theres a mac app called Facebook Sync but Facebook shut it down because it violated their TOS. It just takes all your Facebook contacts and adds them to address book. Lucky for you, i've still got an old copy and it still works! Email me and i'll send a copy your way

Zack: you don't get it. It doesn't actually have to sync with my iPhone. It has to sync with my Mac's contact app and THAT will sync with my iPhone.

I still have a copy of FacebookSync too so if anybody needs it let me know. It is outstanding. I use it every week to sync my Macs Address Book with my Facebook contacts. The cool thing is that all the hard work is done by my contacts (change of email address, new number etc) so all I do is sync.

It looks like a synced version of Safaris own RSS reader, and due to the domain a new feature for .Mac.

That's interesting that people are saying Facebook's TOS prevents that. I haven't looked myself, but at first glance that seems like a mistake on their part. They are MY contacts, so I should be able to export them.

On the flip side, you (or they) could argue that the information in fact belongs to the people in my network / friends list... and that by removing it from Facebook, they can no longer guarantee that their users have control over where their data goes.

Of course, that's a tough argument to make, since I can easily print that information, or write it down...

Hello all- There is a Facebook group called "Official Petition to Facebook for vCard Support"- Please search for it, join it, invite all your friends to it. Ultimately it might not change anything but if we show Fb there's a demand for this, maybe they'll at least consider it.
