Open source hardware dinner

I was at an interesting dinner last night with a new company called Bug Labs. Dave Winer was there and wrote it up. That of course caused all sorts of interesting discussions over on TechMeme.

Instead of writing it up, I thought I’d just tell my new Kyte channel about it. By the way, don’t miss the chat over on Kyte. You can send your own video or audio into the chat. It’s really interesting. Yesterday I was sending audio from my Nokia N95 into the chat while I stood in line at the DMV.

    hey robert – at sxsw the keynote was about open source hardware, maker faire we had open source hardware talks, there are a few dozen posts on open source hardware on MAKE, open source hardware kits in our store and right now there’s a video of the open source hardware talk / keynote from OSCON, along with slides.

    jeremy emailed me last week, so i suspect we’re going to see him soon.

    It is potentially quite an interesting development in the XML game….the “big iron” guys are rushing for the more complex solutions in this space, so a simple open XML webservice appliance approach could be quite disruptive. Be good to have a look at it. Anyway, blogged some wild guesses on it here – any more data welcome…Jeremy ? :)

    Glad to see you jumping more and more on the Open Source (and Open Hardware) bandwagon. A truly open framework will “separate the men from the boys” when it comes to innovation. How long will it take the likes of Microsoft (and Apple for that matter) to “get it”?

    Or will it take companies like Asus with $199 laptops to cut the monopolists down to size? Comoditization of hardware has taken too long, way too long, but it is finally starting to happen.
