Milan William Scoble is due September 17th. But Maryam has already told me in no uncertain terms that I will not bring a geek device into the delivery room. Well, turns out I wouldn’t have been the first to Twitter and live stream a birth anyway.
But, my good friend Thomas Hawk will be invited to take first picture. Can’t wait to meet Milan.

Ah Robert. While I can’t imagine you without your phone or video camera very easily, I bet you will be so focused on the birth itself you will forget both items entirely. :)
Later, there will be chances aplenty for that Flickr/ScobleShow/Twitter action.

I actually did have a bit of geekiness to my son’s birth (http://www.livedigitally.com/2007/05/14/personal-update/) but for the most part have kept his life quite private online. Of course, he does have a blog and a ustream channel, but that’s a different matter. Nope, not kidding. :)

I think that is smart. Unplug from the world and immerse yourself in the birth with your family. That is what makes life worth living. “Be there immersed in the moment”
I am sure you will gush about it after the event. Rightly so.

Okay perhpas not live stream the birth but I’m sure very shortly after the birth we will have facebook / twitter / flickr / kyte updates..

Probably wise…I think my wife would’ve killed me if I’d tried it last week. I had suggested a video camera, but that got vetoed real quick.

Our baby is due on 9/1 and I’ll probably twitter something from my Blackberry when I get a chance, but there’s definitely not going to be video…

Great decision, Robert. And hooray to Maryam for taking the stand she did on no “geek devices” in the delivery room. Somethings don’t need to be shared with the world or even videotaped. These days it might end up on YouTube.

Good choice! As a maternity RN I can honestly tell you that the “best” and most intimate family birth experiences are closed ones. No phone calls (until after), no extra hangers-about or lookie-loos, no visitors coming and going during labor, and even no cameras. Too distracting. Again, a couple of nice still shots when all is said and done are terrific, but I think the rest is best served as magical memories, not a media production.
It just be all about you guys.

Sorry, Robert, but Maggie Mason trumps everyone in both Twittering and flickr-ing the birth of her son this past February. And it wasn’t her husband who wielded the geek devices, it was Maggie. While she was in labor. Yup.

Didn’t twitter it, but my wife herself was in Yahoo Messenger on her Blackberry chatting away with our family and friends through most of the labor. Our son just turned one month old today.

I kept geek devices with me for the birth of our two children. When my firstborn was born, while he was in the nursery and my wife was being sewn up (C-section), I took out my Pocket PC and created an appointment with the details of his birth. The next year when our second son was born, I took my camera phone into the nursery to take a few pictures to show my wife while she waited for him to be brought in. I also made a few calls to family and close friends to announce the birth.
Both of ours were C-sections. I found my geek devices to help fill in the gaps of time when I was stuck in limbo while the baby was in the nursery getting cleaned up and put through some tests and my wife was put in recovery. She appreciated seeing the pictures on my phone.
I wouldn’t stream though, and if I used Twitter that would be debatable.

Just to clear a few things up, I did password protect the live ustream feed, but it seems the recorded archives are available for public viewing. I did give out the url and password on my twitter account, but the majority of people following me on that account are friends. I did not interact with anyone through the chat box, as it was lagging quite a bit. The updates that I gave through my phone, on twitter, only took a couple seconds each, so it wasn’t much of a distraction. All-in-all, my wife and I are happy with the decision, because it allowed our friends and family to get a glimpse of this wonderful event.
Congratulations to Maryam and yourself. If you don’t have a baby-wipe warmer, I highly suggest you purchase one. (They save a lot of crying)
