My weird life…

First of all, Jim Long is an NBC camera dude who is on Twitter. That alone is weird enough. But his Tweet tonight?

“thanks new dad!!! how’s the sleep?? hey White House press secretary Scott Stanzel had nice things to say bout you!!

Whoa? Who the heck?

I remember Scott Stanzel from Microsoft. It hadn’t registered that this was the same Scott. Wikipedia reports that Scott left Microsoft in October to join the White House.

Wild! I told Jim “Scott’s a great guy for a Republican.”

Maybe it’s time for a tour of the White House? Jim also told me that Scott is a big social media advocate.

Oh, and I’m getting some sleep, just at random times. :-)

    Scoble for President!!

  2. Aaron B. Hockley Says:

Social media in the white house? Oh boy… I can see the fake GW Bush Tweets now… if someone hasn’t done it already…

  3. Robert Scoble Says:

Jeremy: I don’t want that hell. Not to mention that if you thought George Bush has screwed it all up wait until you get MY hands on things!

Aaron: it probably won’t be George Bush but someday a President WILL use the Internet stuff to communicate with us (and listen to us). That will be an interesting day.

I spoke at a State Department conference on blogging a couple years ago. The only group in that whole crowd that had the first idea of why social media was important were the Pentagon guys. They actively commented on blogs, both those that were pro-war and anti-. Is that right, that the only group would be the military? Makes sense. When not politicked into another dimension, military people don’t stand on ceremony–they fight to win. Wish the rest of the government would catch up (maybe they are?).

    Or do I?

  5. Michael Markman Says:

It’s pretty clear that they’re already listening to us. Without a warrant, either. I expect that NSA was into social graphs networks long before Facebook. They’ve already joined the conversation. If you’re very quiet, you can hear them breathing. It’s Admiral Pointdexter who should be on the Newseek cover, not Mark Zuckerberg. ;)

  6. Code Red Says:

There are plenty of fine Republicans out there, Robert, you and your commenters forget that leaning too far either way will have you falling over. The last thing this country needs right now is to ‘over-correct’… I’m right down the middle because there are people in both parties who scare me, period. Regardless of who the President is, he/she has FAR better things to be doing than entertaining on Twitter…I hope the day never comes. I laughed out loud when I read Aaron’s comment, and more so when I read your reply. I don’t want to know that the President is going for tea, a meeting, or that he/she just found 50 cents in an Oval Office cushion. Do any of you realise the amount of effort and energy by countless parties that go into simply moving the President from Point A to Point B in a single building? I know that has nothing to do with communicating to the constituency, but if you grasped the scale you’d understand that “Presidents Don’t Twitter”…and I give you full permission to start making T-shirts that say as much.

    Peace to us all.

  7. Scott Stanzel Says:

Great guy for a Republican? I guess I’ll take that as a compliment!

Seriously, I hope you are well, Mr. Scoble. Congrats on the new baby. Let me know when you make it to DC, as I may be able to figure out a way to take you on that tour - despite your leanings…

    Best,
    Scott

  8. Robert Scoble Says:

Scott, heheh. I used to be a Republican. My photo of Ronald Reagan still hangs in the Silicon Valley Republican headquarters.

But, would love to meet up someday in DC. Not likely to happen this year, though.

    Good luck to you.

  9. Ron Says:

what does being a Republican have to with whether one is a good person or not? And here I thought liberals were supposed to be the open-minded ones.

  10. Dawn Says:

Finally some talk of Republicans. This is the most Liberal internet I have ever seen!

  11. Aaron Brazell Says:

@Dawn: You mean there’s another internet that I’m not aware of? Sheesh! I need to get on the ball. Wonder what is going on in that internet. ;-)

  12. Joseph Hunkins Says:

Kudos to Scott for bringing more Social Media to the ever-in-need-of-more-transparency government sector. Scoble, sometimes I think you know *everybody in the world!*
