If it's beneficial to work then you should connect to work colleagues. Perhaps your colleague really does want to connect in order to get to know you better. This can be a good thing and should in my opinion, be seen as a positive way forward. Lastly, you can use your privacy settings to control what your colleague does and doesn't see.
